Interesting thoughts. Given the cost of repairs it sure could be a worry if you don,t have some sort of warranty.

Being in the position I'm in, with a 1999 1100S, 35K miles and a full dealer history, on it's third transmission problem. It was interesting.

My thoughts over the last week or so have been along the lines of....

I like my bike. So it's resale value is largely irrelevant. I'll run the thing into the ground (i.e. resale = £0, or thereabouts). BUT what I have to consider is the running costs. These are adding up....

If I was the "trade in for a new bike every 2 years / 2000 miles" as described in the article, how much per mile would that actually cost me? More than trying to squeeze more miles out of my current bike @ BMW service rates? Probably not.

Either way, it's a fooking expensive way of getting around, or having fun, or both, depending on what you use your bike for.

Got to say that looking around, I've seen a 16000 mile FSH Yamaha divvy offered for £895, a Suzuki on this forum was offered for not much cash....but a quick eBay showed 180 of the little devils at around the same money. These are bloody reliable bikes, offered for little cash.

I am beginning to wonder..../ question my wisdom of BMW ownership!

Gonna pick up the S sometime next week and have an adult discussion with the dealer. We'll see what transpires. Hope it ain't going to be bye bye BMW, but if necessary.....They'll lose a $250,000 per annum, middle aged, professional customer.....because if there's one thing we hate....

The article is an opinion piece. I agree with some of his opinions, but not all of it.

I do believe BMW are an innovative company supplying quality bikes. Wherever I park my bike I always come back to a crowd. Me and my biking buddies laugh about it. I park up next to my mates 4 triumphs and 2 Hondas and the quality of the design stands out with regard instruments, cable routings, linkages etc.

BMW have clearly dropped a couple of clangers in recent years, but i think the dealer network and BMW do a lot to negate some of these issues and keep the ownership experience a rewarding one.

I go away every year with my mates. The bikes have stayed roughly constant over the past 5 years and so far the 2 BMW's (1200s and 1100RS) have been faultless, as have the 2 Honda VFR800s.

3 of the 4 Triumphs have suffered problems. Overheating, broken fuel connectors and a host of other minor issues.

I know what I would rather ride, and after 5 years with my 1200 I can't think of another bike, old or new I would rather own.
