This is actually a pretty good idea given there are people out there who have had their motorcycle entitlement removed in error when changing their address or renewing their licence. It's a good idea to photocopy your licence as the dvla having taken an entitlement off cannot reinstate it as the info is actually taken off the database. There was a guy not long ago had to retake his whole test from scratch despite having had his licence for the best part of 20 years after the dvla cocked up and there was no way to prove that he had ever taken his test.

At the height of their cock ups there was a police mechanic who had the same happen despite a letter from the chief plod of his force DVLA still wouldn't relent and he had to retake his test. Another was a guy who'd taken copies and sent them to DVLA and while out on a Sunday rideout his wife called him to come home as the police had raided his home and seized his PC as the DVLA were accusing him of falsifying the copied docs he'd sent them!

One thought I had was those occasional transgression I've had over the last 40 years could work in favour as I could point DVLA to Court records and say had I not been licenced then the Court would have penalised me at the time.

I got my local MP to verify the photocopies saying I had lost faith in the system. She wrote to the DVLA. I got a letter back from DVLA saying they were sorry I had lost faith blah blah but I asked for the return of my old licence which came back with a hole punched through it. I kept the MP's letters and the old licence so I have proof of having a licence

Mate of mine with no faith in the system said he had lost his licence (he hadn't) and paid for a replacement one when his photo had to be renewed. When the replacement came back minus his bike entitlement he said the old one had been found and could prove he had passed the bike test. DVLA relented and sent him one with the correct entitlements.

Some ambiguous wording I think? Here is what it said about my category A entitlement.


You can drive motorbikes up to 25kW power output and power weight ratio up to 0.16kW/kg; motorbikes with sidecar and power weight ratio up to 0.16kW/kg; any size motorbike, with or without a sidecar if you've completed the large motorbike direct access scheme


I never (and i am am sure most of us here are the same) completed Direct Access because I passed my test in 89, before direct access strictly existed.

I think you may have a problem Jim ... as mine simply says

"You can drive motorbikes with or without a sidecar and a maximum speed of more than 50km/h or with engine over 50cc"

I passed my bike test in 80 and the car one in 89

Herb,
I got your version. I passed my (250cc) test in 1980. Been riding "full power" large bikes ever since. My licence due for renewal later this year. I think I might have misplaced my existing paperwork.

I passed my bike test in 1974 (there were no men with red flags but only a 250cc restriction for L plates and then anything you wanted post test) and it says:

You can drive motorbikes up to 25kW power output and power weight ratio up to 0.16kW/kg; motorbikes with sidecar and power weight ratio up to 0.16kW/kg; any size motorbike, with or without a sidecar if you've completed the large motorbike direct access scheme

So I'm in the same situation, need to get some clarification I think.

Steve, I have just checked yours and you must have misread, it actually reads:

"You can drive motorbikes with or without a sidecar and a maximum speed of up to 50km/h and with an engine up to 50cc"
