Engine paint

Post by dave the german »

Just spoke to a guy at RS Paints about paints for the RWB Boxercup - they list an engine paint. Not sure how accurate it is colourwise but he sounded knowledgeable and very helpful. He said the paint isn't heat resistant as such but normally an engine paint doesn't have to be - that is reserved for exhausts but said the main problem for flaky engine paint is cos a decent thingy etch primer isn't used - just sayin cos I know a few hear want to tart their engines up. I'm going to give it a go over winter

What areas are you thinking of, Dave?

Cyl covers and main engine casing - I would say non-resistant paint is okay. Not so sure about cylinder barrels, though...............

That's probably where I'll be painting Al. Going to try to get the manky fins cleaned up with steam and/or soda

Be interested to see what you use and how you get on Dave. Loads of crud and flaking paint on my barrel fins. Been wondering how to best get it cleaned up, other than a narrow wire brush.

Buy a second-hand bead/shot blaster.

Mask and bag the rest of the bike - and have at it.

Then wander around the house, garden and garage and see how many other things you can give a dose of blasting (you'll be amazed)

Then sell the unit for the same price you paid.

Job's a carrot! :D

I had an area of paint peeling on the fins on the RH cylinder that i found when I was doing the fork leg and brace.
It seems to separate from the alloy in one piece, leaving a distinct edge to the remaining paint.
I scraped all the loose paint off with a knife and then rubbed the edges down with emery. Cleaned with spirit and primed with self etching primer then resprayed with Smootherite silver.
I sort of expected this to be a temporary fix because of the crudeness of the job, but have had no further issues with it so far

Hmmm, thanks Mick. Sounds more like what I could do without having to fork out for Al's blaster - no doubt the right way to get the best possible finish at home.

Sounds like a nice little winter project to keep you out of mischief.
Forks and brace out, bodywork off. Clean crud, prime, paint then reassemble..
Hey presto!! Like a new pin next spring. :D

I touched up my cylinder fins with (silver) heat resistant paint from Frost Automotive, and so far it seems fine.

Works a treat.
