had a look around the forum but cannot see these questions.
1 - what milage are people clocking on their bikes annually.
2 - what are the highest milage bikes.
3 - what are the main or recurring problems .

clutches and abs at number 3 i'm predicting.
tried adding a poll but i think i have failed to. :roll:

they are 8-13 yr old bikes...............

There are anything between 10k and 120k miles, I think.

So - the average could be anywhere.

But - I've not heard much problem from gearboxes, final drives, paintwork (apart from engine covers (although the 1100 appears to fair better in that respect than later models).

Brakes can be a "problem" in as much as over-winter storage might seize the pistons, or cause localised corrosion where the metal inclusions in the pads - are in contact.

Other than that - swing-arm bearings perhaps once in 5 yrs?

ABS - Eventually iwill pitch a fit - and the best course appears to be to remove hte system.

would i look in a Honda dealer no way!

Gearbox is horrible but seems to work fine

Main recuring problems, Hall sensor [BMW using the wrong grade of wire between the sensor units and the connector then fixing the cable to the crankcase] better replacements are available from Cata Dan or if you look on ebay there is a seller in Greece both of these units are better than the BMW one and will cost far less, Fuel filter and pump fitted into fuel tank [daft idea] oh yes the nut joining the handlebars to the seat

Can't realy fault the bike it has some little odities that seem to add up to make it a great bike it's a tough old thing that has only let me down once on the road in four years

you can shove your Hondas up your jacksie .....

Kawasaki, Suzuki or Yamaha ... maybe .... but I've got thoroughly bored with the whole torqueless Japanese obsession with rpm and power at stratospheric revs. Which is why I like the R11S .. lumps of low end and mid range .... same goes for my F650 and the R80 .... the K12GT and the 330 on the other hand just have power everywhere :)

Honda=Quality. I luv 'em. And, tho I'm very attached to my 11S my next addition will be a Honda 600 cbr (with ABS). Of all mass produced bikes, Honda, in my opinion, has the edge as far as value for money/build quality/inovation are concerned. BMWs are over-rated. The cold, dead hand of 'The Acountants' is often all to obvious once you start to take a dispassionate look at their 'product'. Of course they do, sometimes, (more by luck than judgement?) get it spectacularly (almost) right, which is why I won't be saying goodbye to my 11S anytime soon. Most of us buy 'stuff' with our hearts and not with our heads. How else can you explain Ducati still being in bussiness and the recent company history of MV Agusta?

53k on mine and I'm doing 15k+ miles a year.

Nothing has made me seriously look elsewhere yet. I seem to be having to replace quite a few age/mileage related things at the moment but its not really much of an issue. Still on the original clutch at the moment too!

I bought my 2000 model R1100S in 2008 with 29,000 miles on it. By the time I sold it in 2010 It had gone up to 83,000. Really unfortunate for the new owner, it broke down a few weeks later when the cable to the fuel pump wore through, but I think he fixed it pretty quick.

In all the time I had it, it never really let me down, I swapped the bevel box at 80,000 as it was getting noisy and I got a S/H unit for a £100, so cheaper and easier then replacing bearings.

I think I changed the Paralever pivot bearings twice and also had to replace the clutch slave, but other than that normal servicing and still on original clutch, oh, and I had to replace the drive-shaft, but that was my fault as I mullered it trying to seperate the two halves.

Thing is, with the likes of Darren at motorworks and other breakers, nothing was ever a real drama or too expensive.

I went to Germany and back several times and remember once doing a 700 mile trip in 10 hours.

Writing all this and remembering I realise what a fantastic bike it was if a little agricultural.

Wish I had one now if Im truthful, this new K1300GT I have is a pile of junk in comparison, though lovely when its not breaking :?

Problems in order of occurrence: fork leg paint; swing arm bearing - bevel box bearing ( my ignorance of the need to service them, perfect now), gearbox main bearing. Regular proper servicing is all they seem to need. I have recently tried a K1200 GT, heavy but very comfy. Could easily do all day riding on one of those, but wont give up this boxer.

44K on my R11, bought it with just over 40K in October last year, Only reason I haven't put more miles on it has purely been down to pennies to be honest, just haven't been able to justify spending on fuel for anything other than VERY occasional daytrip, apart from commute that is :cry:
Thankfully no problems for me so far, apart from sorting the obvious lack of previous care on forks, engine casing & seized brakes.

Had two Hondas in my time, a 1984 CB900F which needed reins, not handlebars, and a brilliant wee 1982 VT500 (import shaft driven one) which was the best commuter bike I've owned to date, only down side was the cable operated front brake :!: :shock:
Extremely unlikely to buy a new generation Honda, bland beyond belief IMHO.

I bought My '99 1100S in 2003 with 14 k miles currently with 94 k miles.
I used to do 12k plus per year but have more bikes now so currently maybe 5 k per year on the S .
Replaced the following , Front wheel , ( the original is repairable ) 2x fuel pumps , ( preventive maint) 2 x front caliper rebuilds with pistons , currently have alternative calipers fitted, 2 sets of front brake discs fitted,
removed the abs in recent years ( more consistent brakes), 1 x right hand camshaft and followers ( wear noticed when investigating a noise) 2 x pushrods ( didn't cure the noise) , clutch slave cylinder ( preventive), rear bevel box at 93k (noisy/vibes) 2 x secondhand oe silencers (cracked/leaking)
Throttle cable set ( preventive).
1 x set of rubber inlet manifolds (cracked), 1x set of second hand throttle bodies ( noisy). 1x rear brake master cylinder (leaking).
3x batteries (never failed)
Routine oil&filters and pads , plugs , couple of alternator belts (never failed)
Swing arm bearings x 1 set , paralever bearings x 2 sets and one set of para lever pivots.
That's all I can think of at the moment...
1x non start at home , corroded fuel pump connector.
1x breakdown 2 km from home( very recent) , poorly crimped clip on fuel filter after fitting new pump to prevent breakdowns...

Don't do what i did and push home it damn near killed me :lol:

No valid comparisons really , Y2k CB 500, 80 k miles from new, 3 x clutch cables , 4x C&S sets( probably cost more than the bevel box..) , one front caliper rebuild. 1 x rear set of wheel bearings, one x neutral switch . Valve clearances never needed adjustment. 1x front and rear brake disc, usual service stuff.

I've done about 20K miles on mine since getting it (now on 44K). I've not done anywhere near that on any other bike. (owned 6 so far) No other bike have I been so happy with for so long. In fact the only reason I want to change this one, is because I really actually wanted a BCR in the first place.

Only thing gone wrong in 20-oddK miles, was a seal on the clutch cylinder (known issue with the clutch) and a wiring loom rubbed through on the front subframe (again, known issue, vibratey bike and poor routing of wiring)

Apart from regular (ish) servicing never really had to do anything major to mine although I must confess to less that 20K in 7 years or ownership :oops: Bought from my brother at three years old with about 4K on it.

Oil & filter change ever 3K and changed the gearbox/bevel box oil at about 12K, needs doing again really. Fuel filter at 23K. No bearings, not even adjusted although they were adjusted by Pidcocks at about 4K (the first and only service I have had done by a dealer). Brake fluid changed after 7 years :oops:

Fork bottoms/brace stripped and repainted earlier this year. Engine cover standing up pretty well.

Jobs to do, fit Powercommander I bought two years ago :oops: :oops: and fit the Rocket sprockets I bought recently.


I need to get out more :roll:

Has Just today clocked 60,000 Miles.
I have averaged 10,370 per year since I bought it Jan 2008. I have replaced paraleveer bearings twice an dhad teh bevel box input Bearing and oil seal changed. I changed the Front Discs at 59,000. otherwise reguklar servicing. OIL & Filter every 6k, Gerabox & Final drive, airfilter and Plugs every 12K (I now do the bevel box every 6k) Oh and the Alternator belt was changed at 36K.
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
