A question about removing theoxygen sensor on a R1100S

Post by tyrap »

To anyone that can help.
I have fitted a full Boxer Cup race exhaust on my '04 and re-connected the oxygen sensor in the manifold BSP hole that is in the new system.
Question is:
1,,Should I remove the sensor and blank off the hole? I have heard that the sensor is mainly there to lean off the fueling to protect the cat at just off idle (that isn't there now in my case....).
2,, If I do take out the sensor out, do I just tywrap the think out of the way and will the sensor pick up atmospheric readings and effect the fueling?

Thanks to anyone that can help,

Warren

Wont do any harm to get rid of it, on my bike disconnecting it helped the fueling on tick over as with it connected the sensor was leaning the mixture right off on idle. The wiring goes into a plug, which if your lucky you can reach up on the right hand side under the tank and disconnect, then you can remove the whole thing.

I wouldnt leave it dangling in the wind so to speak

Warren - I sold you the exhaust !

How are things - hope all well and you are happy with the small power increase and the extra noise !!

Yep, no probs removing the sensor, I actually had it connected when I had it on my BCR, but i don't think it makes a whole heap of difference to be honest. I may have mentioned that I was thinking about adding a Power Commander and getting it setup correctly on a dyno, but never got around to it. You may want to think about this if you decide to keep the race pipe on the bike.

Hope all well in Yorkshire - got a track day a Brands on by BCR next week.

All the best - Nick

Hey Nick, good to hear from you, I should have just called you!
I have a chip (not yet installed) and have a filter coming from SJ in the US. Bikes runs perfectly as it is but I hope that the chip and filter will help, is it worth chipping ther bike after that? Guess it depends on how it feels and runs. I think I may leave the sensor connected anyway, it seems to run OK.

When are you to get the HP2? Love the look of it, a different animal to the BC by the looks.
Raced at Brands over the Easter break, horrendous conditions but beautiful circuit, blew the head gasket though. Was at Croft this weekend just gone but crashed my R6 in the last race, just made a mistake, ran on the grass at over 100, stayed up but lost it just as I was about to get back on the track. I'm OK but ruined another bloody RX7, expensive!

Take care and stay in touch,

Warren

Hi Warren - no probs, glad you survived a 'moment' at Croft !

I suspect a combination of Laser race pipe, the correct chip and filter should be good enough. As mentioned a Power Commander will assist with these things in place, but may require fine tuning on a dyno. There may be some other threads on this subject if you do a search.

BMW have delayed the last HP2S delivery's due to their carbon fibre manufacturer not being able to deal with demand apparently. The components are difficult to fabricate and there are only a couple of 3rd party manufacturers that BMW trust to produce them to exacting standards. Could be customer service bull from BMW HQ, but what can you do.

A lucky chap on this forum has already taken delivery of his HP2S and can be seen in 'Boxerpix/HP2 Sport'

Take it easy and try and keep that R6 on the black stuff !!
