Get back to two wheels
Hi there,
I am looking to get back into biking after a few years away and am thinking of spending some cash on a second hand R1100/1150 model. What would you reccomend and what should I look out for.
Thanks stuart

Welcome on board Stuart.
I would quite unashamedly recommend my R1100S which you can see pictures of here:

Drop me a PM if you are interested. You can come and see it in Kinross whenever you like.

Ok so I take it your not just asking about the R1100s which this site is dedicated too as you mention 1150's, so what type of bike do you want, sports tourer, naked, Full On Tourer, Ewan / Charlie mobile(GS) ????
If it is the 1100s youre after, you have again got a few choices, Standard S, Sport model, or the Replicas, IE, the Boxer Cup models.
Firstly you need to ride one, the later Boxer Cups are quite a long way up because of the suspension and if your short in the leg department you may struggle, then youve got ABS or Not, I went for Non ABS because of simplicity, but people who have ABS swear by it, or at it sometimes and could be worth considering as you are coming back to biking and it may just save youre bacon.
Youve also got single or twin spark, the later coming in about 2003, supposedly less susceptible to surging but then Ive never had surging on my 2000 Single spark.
The one thing that most BMW people will agree on is that the 1100S is one of the better built and less troublesome of the Boxers, and some people even saying that Pre 03 bikes are actually better still, dont know, as Ive never had a later one.
Plenty of members with other models, especially rare Red 1200 GS's, so ask away.
Lots of things to think about, obviously a Bike with a full BM service history is generally more sought after but then you pay the premium, best thing is to get to know us and maybe find a member near to you to have a look at a bike youre considering, or buy Steves , or Joes, Im not getting involved, dont think youll get ripped off by any of the established members on this site, Ive met a lot of them and good peeps they are.

Stuart,
I would take Stevie up on his offer. I had the bike as a loan last year and the bike was great.
If you have never had a boxer, then the best advice is to ride one first as they are not the same as an in-line engine.

Hi there,
Have been back to work for few days and went over to BMW dealers in bishopbriggs for look see and gasp at the dealer prices. The wife is going to have a fit. The one positive was I can have a day on a 1200gs free as they have demo available. Bring licence a go out for the day. I think i will take them up on their offer and I would like to come over to the east coast for a chat and talk about boxers (not dogs).
Thanks again stuart
I've been keeping my eye on ebay so we will just have to see what happens.
