the glass of my mirrors of my early 1100s have worked loose. anyone got a fix for this? i thought about drilling the plastic surround then filling the voids with expandable foam.... or maybe drop a bead of clear silicon around the glass.
anyone else been there?

you have to be hardy to rest on your laurels
Hi,yes i've been there. I cured the problem with two tooth picks,a small rubber "O" ring (or something similar) and little bit of patience. Take one of the tooth picks and (gently) wedge it between the mirror and the mirror frame so you now have a gap. Cut the O ring into small strips (you can see where this is leading, right
), and very gently poke one of the O ring strips into the gap using the other tooth pick. Any excess O ring can be trimmed back with a stanley blade, you should now have a rattle free mirror
.
But a word of warning,DO NOT use a screw driver to wedge or poke at the mirror,it WILL crack,i know this from experience
.
Good luck,
Andy

Run a line of clear impact glue around the glass/plastic interface. Leave mirror on it's back while glue sets. Trick is to place a very thin bead and not to drag any strings of glue over the plastic. Had to do this on some Jap bike mirrors when they started to rattle. Silicone will work too, work the sealant into the joint with a cloth. It's less runny than the glue, but can be more messy.
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.
My fix was to enlarge the drain hole in the bottom of the mirror slightly and then fill the housing with silicone. It uses nearly a cartridge of the stuff but it worked well. No rattling and no visible sign of repair. Finished it off with acap gromit in the hole.
Weighed a bit more though.
