I haven't had a chance to test the 1200 yet so how does it compare to the 1100? I can see that the ergonomics are a little bit more sporty but how about real life useability on UK roads? Is the power too peaky or ok. How abrupt is the power increase at 6K upwards.
Yes, I know I just need to go and ride it myself, but can't sort that out for a couple of weeks, so anyone who had an 1100 and now has a 1200 - comments appreciated.
Thanks

depends upon what you want, and what you want to spend
The 1100s makes a better sports-tourer
The 1200s makes a better sports bike.
For £9,500............
I'd get:
A good R1100s AND a Sports 600 class

(ask BMW-Fahrer - if your ears aren't prone to bleeding

If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........
See if that works .....

OK, I'm going about this the wrong way. You guys are being too honest and I am not being honest enough. Let me start again.
I'm changing my bike. My head says I should get an 1100S, preferably an older one so I can save some money to spend on white goods for my wife. My heart says I want a 1200S and sod the dishwasher. I need people to help me to justify an irrational decision. I wont be doing the touring thing anymore and I wont be carrying a pillion anymore, but I need a bit more justification than that. Please help me out with a few sensible, rational pacifying reasons for turning up at home with a shiny new toy and 5 packs of marigolds.
Cheers

Right................
Bikes:
Have a shot of each - R1100s and R1200s (do the 1100s first). You can't base your decision on the sh1t that we tell you (apart from - try them)
Dishwashers:
Buy her an ASKO machine. If you have any money left.......... she'll let you buy an MV Agusta & a BMW!

hjr1100s & Blackal
HJR1100S, I read your writeup (which was great) but it raised a few questions. What happens at 6000 rpm. Does the power kick in very fast? I've ridden an ST1200 and a GS1200. Is the engine very different. I love the GS engine but the seat height is a problem. and anyway, I really enjoyed the r1100s which I used to have. The one thing that would put me off the 1200S would be if the performance was too much for the road. I like smaller twisty roads and the 1100s was perfect in many ways. I love the looks of the 1200 but I wouldn't want the power of a full on sportsbike because I wouldnt be able to use enough of it on the road. The bottom line I guess is : is the 1200 about torque or top end power? Will it suddenly hit a big powerband half way around a corner and throw me off into the ditch? Am I making any sense?
I think I just need to talk it through with you people who have the 1200 (or have ridden them). It's going to drive me crazy waiting 2 weeks for a test ride. I WANT IT NOW!!!!!

I got to ride PB's 1200S (Ohlins, big wheel etc) for a whole afternoon on the last Boxertrix Oop North weekend back in October last year. At the time I had an '04 Boxercup Replika which I'd owned for 5 months and done 8000 miles on (I've done a total of approx 45000 miles on different 11S's).
In terms of sheer riding pleasure, power, handling, brakes, smoothness, comfort etc (I'm 6'3") the 1200 kicked the 11 into next week. Yes - you read that right, the 12 was more comfy than the 11.
IMHO, if you want to carry a passenger and/or lots of luggage get the 11. For everything else (and if you can afford it) get the 12. It's a fabulous bike and I want one...
...badly.
To redress the balance though, the 1100 is more gruff, more characterful. And it's prettier too.

You are becoming clear..............
You have set your heart/mind on a 1200s
(nothing wrong with that, either)
I have a 2004 BoxerCup and tried the 1200s (with Ohlins) for an afternoon and it blew me away
. I'm not that experienced but found it (1200s) so confidence-inspiring - I got a shock when I glanced at the clocks and found what speed I was taking bends at.
I wrote it up here:

Get yourself a Red/Silver (pure class) R1200s, you won't regret it
(get the ASKO for yer missus too, and you're sorted
)

That's not the question he's asking though is it?winger wrote:If i had to make a choice now,i'd buy a Fazer thou, never mind any other pros's and cons, slightest sniff of a straight you wouldn't know which way it had gone,1100 or 1200s,and you can still carry the kitchen sink when you have to!!.
For example (using your logic)...
The Blackbird will blow a Fazer thou into next week, and carry as much luggage, in greater comfort. And unlike the Fazer it'll sit at 130mph all day and not put its rider in need of an osteopath. Doesn't mean to say that he'd want one though.
Back on topic...
He clearly wants a Boxer be it of 1100 or 1200 persuasion, and is asking opinions of the 11 v the 12. For my needs I'd take the 12.
E'r Rich missing the point a Fazer is in the same market place just as good and half the price, and is isn't a big fat orible tubs of gut that a complete shit to work on!!!feck did i forget, and when you touch the back brake the friggin front forks dive on you,the fazers a practical bargain something your never going to level at a 1200s,without going into Gueting routine it's about as much use as a hole in the head or be it an expsensive one.
Want a sports tourer buy one, want a Sports bike buy one the 1200 ain't either.
As for the Sprint great bike, but no better than a 1200s the pillion position is a waste of time unless you married to a midgit!!.

Yes, yes, yes, give me more. This is the sort of response I was looking for. Blackal, read your writup and followed the thread through. I wasn't expecting the comfort to be very good, so that's a bonus. All the other comments were positive and most importantly - it sounds like FUN. I'm now optomistically looking forwards to the test ride and searching Ebay for a cheap (as new) dishwasher!
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou all.
