Bar risers and other things
Hi Boxerchaps,
I've just recently aquired my first ever BMW and I opted for the R1100S. Great bike, a bit quirky but good fun to ride. I was wondering if it was possible to fit bar risers on this model, I'm 6'2" with a dodgy back so a bit more comfort would help. Also, I,m just getting used to the bike and a couple of things I've noticed is the second or so engine rattle on cold start up, and sometimes when selecting first gear from standstill I have to rock the bike slightly to get it to engage. Is this normal??
Great site, I've already had one issue resolved by a bit of good advice.
Cheers, Cobbster.

The noise on start up I believe is the second or so it takes for the oil rise from the sump to the cylinder heads.
As for engaging first, I have occasionally have to give a little push forward to encourage first. I think its normal, The gearbox isn't the best feature of the bike

Gear Box
I have put Fully Synthetic G/B Oil (75/90 I think it was) in the Gear & Bevel Boxes and it made a significant difference to selection and effort required to select gears.
I've just fitted the BMW Comfort bars that are well listed already on this site, they are spot on for me and easy to fit.
Cheers

Hi Cobster. Welcome and congratulations on choosing an R1100S
I fitted the BMW "Comfort Bars" which are virtually a copy of the regular bars but they are designed to sit on top of the yoke instead of underneath it. Makes a BIG difference without spoiling the sporty look of the bike.

Don't forget that whatever riser method you use, you will need to extend your brake-line. And if someone tells you to simply move your existing bars above the yoke, remember that they will not have pegs in the bottom to prevent them from turning under heavy braking....

Hi MadDog / All
I have a 2004 BCR, I have read most of the posts regarding R1100 bar raisers, I am not 100% comfortable with the raising the tubes and sticking the original bars back on the top option, without some kind of bar lock, but as I'm also not 100% sure if they will help with my dead hands after 150 miles, I dont want to spend a fortune either, these comfort bars you talk about, dont suppose you or anyone else knows the price please, also obviously I need a longer brake pipe, is it a particular one from another model or a special made up pipe ?
, I take it all other cables are long enough ? Sorry about all the questions
many thanks keith

Hi Keith,
The "Comfort Bar Kit" from BMW comes with the bars, screen and extended brake hose. I got mine second hand for £150 but someone said the kit costs £400 new from BMW.
No cables need extending but the Heated Grips cable needs re-routing slightly.

Hi Keith,
You could try www.apexleisure.co.uk/gillesvariobars.htm
You can get a set of bar risers from them for about £200. You will still need a longer brake hose which I'm sure Goodridge would sort you out with.
