Following on from the thread on the general forum, about polishing yer bits. Seeing how it's a reet obnoxious pissy down day here and I'm bored (supposed to be repairing a guitar but not in the mood!) , I thought I'd whip the bar ends off the S and have a go at polishing them cos they're starting to look a bit scraped & tatty. I was always under the impression that under the black coating they were stainless steel...Not so!
When I started the polishing process and broke through the quite thick coating, the metal underneath looked a little on the pinkish side. At first I thought it was brass, they're certainly heavy enough! I'm not sure what they're made of tho' - could be gun metal which is brass based and used in a lot of marine applications. I think, if my memory serves me right it's a mixture of brass and stainless steel. It looks like brass but it's a bit harder and doesn't tarnish as easily. I'll see how it looks in few days, if it does tarnish then it must be brass and I'll have to lacquer them, but if not probably gun metal
quite nice compared to the usual gold anodised carp, lets hope there's no need for lacquer as you can now keep your self contented with Solvol polishing them

I've had my bar ends semi polished for a couple of years now.I thought they were brass........oh well!
Bailey.
They are brass Dave. Mine are polished and laquered (though they could do with re-doing) and look a treat (IMO).

A little inaccuracy saves a tonne of explanation.
Get some stainless ones you tight arses.Polished brass, its on a bike not a bloody canal boat.Tell you what why dont you paint some flowers down the side and hang a bucket off the bike. I,ve got some stainless ones on mine, got em from oberon engineering when i bought me footpegs.£16 i do believe.Maybe Mr vincent can get on the case and expand his stainless range.

Still not convinced they are brass Gats . They do look very like gunmetal the more I look at 'em. Had a scout round the 'net to remind me what it is......An alloy of copper tin and zinc

Here you are having a go at us yellow-metal stylists and you admit to having stainless steel buckets hanging off your own S!!!!
