R1100S - Rattle in exhaust

Post by R1100Steen »

hello there :)

was on an extended trip over the weekend in Germany and noticed a rattle from the xorst when riding on bumpy roads...
It doesnt look like anything external is loose - so I was wondering if the insides could have rusted apart?

Anybody here have any experience on the matter?

cheers, :)

The internals on my came loose and I managed to blag a spare set of cans from another forum member who had a set of remus cans on his from new. I suspect you can dismantle the silencers (remove the end caps and re weld the innards if you are clever).

ok thanks for the info, but I believe that on mine the sound is coming from the collector box below the gearbox (sorry, should have mentioned that in the OP  )
It rattles when i knock on it with a (rubber) hammer... :bounce:

I had exactly the same on my 1100S. Mechanic suggested a Y Piece to replace it, which luckily I had. I have since obtained an unused catalyic converter and end pipe. BMW mechanic did say that in Germany he had experiences of the loose parts in the cat blocking the flow of exhaust gas which then shut the engine down.

As above it's the catalytic converter (collector) breaking up . I'd imagine prohibitively expensive to replace , and a second hand one will probably be as noisy as your own. A y piece is probably the way to go , I replaced mine soon after purchase and never looked back.

Check that the clamp up under rear seat hasn't come adrift.

Lots of useful hints there - thanks guys, much appreciated :thumbright:

Ill check the easy bits first - such as the underseat clamp...
...and then start looking for a Y-piece :)
Btw - does this Y-thingy go on with the existing fittings - or do I need anything extra to go with it?

Again - thanks for all the info :D

Stop knocking it with a rubber hammer. Advice from the Tommy Cooper School of engineering
