Travelling to work the other morning, in the car for a change, the alternator light came on and the steering assistance failed. Figuring it was a snapped belt I turned around and drove home (about a mile) to swap for the bike.

Turns out it's a failed water pump ..... what stuns me is Eurocar parts have the water pumps as £24 !!! The water pump for the K by comparison, is £275!!

I love car parts prices, amazes me when I hear non motorcycling car owners bemoaning the cost of parts and consumables for their cars. Hells teeth I got new disks and pad all round for £160 .. you can't even get 1 OEM disk off BMW for the K for that. A pair of genuine BMW pads for the K are £140 and compared to the car ones have very little material on them

I appreciate that production levels etc make it more economical for car parts but still can't help thinking we get stiffed

Still, even with high parts and consumable prices for bikes I can't think of a better way to spend my pennies

It's like when the old boy 9(Bob) told his mate that he'd paid £50 for a cup final ticket. His mate (Alf) said you can get half pissed and get a hooker for £50.

I suspect 50% is down to economies of scale and 50% is motorcyclists being taken for the proverbial ride.

Car companies are pretty good at using common parts and platforms and in some cases the volumes can be enormous. I used to work for a company that made brake NVH shims and for some common platforms we were making tens of millions of parts per year. Consumables in the car world are pretty damn cheap now.

Economy of scale. More car parts are sold than bike parts. If it is an exotic then obviously the production run would be lower hence the higher price for an equivalent part.

My mate nearly wet his pants when he saw me in it , warned me not to try and pick up any chicks ....



I bought a Ford Ka the other day x reg for £200 with 10 months MOT .

A few niggles , but the previous owner was up front .

Left door doesn't open from outside , left window winder motor doesn't work .

Oh , and he complained the lights are shite ...

Ford lists door handle £48 + postage .

Ebay , handle £7 including postage .

15 mins and 2 pop rivets , all done .

Window winder motor burnt out , it can stay like that , passenger doesn't need to open the window

The lights , well , turn the adjuster on the dash from all the way down to all the way up and they are perfect .

So , a spare winter jalopy for £210 will do me fine , can get the Merc sorted for a few trips out to Spain later on next year .

Some where my sensible head kicks in , and a cheap car that keeps me warm and dry and doesn't guzzle too much fuel sorts me out .

I've never been one to try and impress the bloke next to you at the traffic lights ....

I have an old E46 3 series estate.
It failed MOT recently and had to get the rear rotors + calipers replaced.

The front rotors were in bad conditions too, but I didn't ask the mechanic to replace those because I was trying to keep the price down as I don't use the car that often (actually, a few times a month).

When I got the invoice I felt like an idiot for not replacing the front ones too.
Rotors for cars are 40 quid each. FORTY.

Looks like I'm spending some time over christmas to replace the front ones too myself.

I know it it a piece of metal, but go buy a brand new Braking rotors set for your bike...
