EWS! Warning help please.

Post by Copper »

Hi

Rode my R1200S to work today no problem. When I went to leave this afternoon when I turned on the ignition the orange triangle warning light appeared and EWS! Flashed up on the display, the bike wouldn't start. A quick on the spot Google via my phone suggested this is an error with the antenna for the immobiliser and a common fault. I noted that there is some insulation tape on the loom supplying the ignition switch suggesting it might have been worked on before. I waggled the loom and (whether this helped or not) managed to get the bike started and rode home. Now my bike is home (I haven't touched it) and its doing the same thing. My bike has been left outside of late and rained on not sure if this might not help.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

There is a thread somewhere about this - a break in the wiring loom at the back of the headstock?

Al
If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........

See if that works .....

Hi,
Wiring loom can be a bit tight up towards the ignition switch and is known to break (Dont ask me how I know :( ) All I can suggest is to check the loom near the headstock carefully for a break.

Or .. as happened on the K1200s the ring antenna around the ignition switch breaks. A new one is not expensive. The EWS message is the fault message for this IIRC.

Some people resorted to carrying a spare - have not heard of it on R bikes though

Hi,

Sorry went on Holiday for two weeks so just left the bike.

Got my first chance to look at it yesterday.

I peeled the tape of the loom from the antenna and sure enough there was a green and brown wire broken in two. I've temporarily bodged it back together until I can get some of the proper fabric tape to make it look neat. Problem solved.

Incidentally with the LH side panel off I noticed that another loom behind it had been rubbing and some of the wires inside were exposed. I can't imagine it would take long to wear through to the bare wire which might prove costly. My bikes done around 28000 miles so if yours has it might be worth checking.

Thanks everyone.

Jon
