Boxer woes

Post by dave the german »

Cracking ride on the R1200S on Saturday to Barrie Robson's in York to look at getting a GS but stopped for fuel and the bike wouldn't start in gear - it done this when I got it but adjusted clutch switch and all was sweet. It started in neutral and when I got home I tried it a few times - sometimes it would start sometimes it wouldn't. I killed the engine with the kill switch so the headlights stayed on and started it and stopped it a few times in neutral. After starting it a few times with the headlight on it was struggling to start so left it on charge overnight and same thing happened after 24 hours charge and just ended up clicking and not turning.

Anyone else had this happen to them? Points to battery being kaput but would the battery die in such a manner? All thoughts appreciated

Boxercup - just had this serviced and if it is left idling the revs drop momentarily and the bike almost cuts out. This had happened before the service and happens when warm - not noticed anything when cold cos of fast idle - is it the dreaded Hall effect sensor?

Again thoughts appreciated

Batteries can be oddball things.... I stopped the car once (e46 330Ci) and left it on sidelights for 3 minutes while I popped a letter into a mailbox. Car refused to restart, although lights were bright when switched on. AA man tried a jump start with his uber system, no joy.

Put a new battery on it next morning (after tow home) and it sprang into life :)

The KGT too did a similar thing, stopped to pick up a fish supper, refused to start. 20 minutes later, after finishing fish supper it started up, so to be on the save side I replaced the battery with one from the nice people at

Put the previous battery into my R80RS where it's been working fine ever since :S

Cheers Steve

I left it off charge and I'm going to try it before I go to work - I tried it late last night (the neighbours love me!!) and it started in neutral but switching on and off soon had it just clicking. I haven't time until the weekend to check all connections. The problem with it not starting in gear is the bike can cut out on down changes and I cannot start it with the clutch in (this is according to a GS site) it did happen to me but once Id adjusted the clutch switch it's been fine. Am I putting extra load on by starting it in gear so the battery has not got enough power to turn it? I don't know but unfortunately I haven't time to look at it until the weekend

Dave;
I think you have two separate problems.

Sounds like your battery is toast.....on it's way out, cannot maintain a good charge.

Check your clutch switch again. I was having the same stalling issues with my 12S. Adjusted the clutch switch and all was fine for a short time.

Bike began stalling again.
Readjusted the clutch switch and checked it with the GS 911 attached while watching the real time values. Clutch switch was intermittent. I could here it click, but it was not switching.

You can swap your front brake light switch with the clutch switch to see if that cures your problem.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Thanks,
I'll try that - first time I adjusted it, it was still the same until I ran through the checks - don't know if you have to do it as per manual but it solved the problem - like you said for a short time. I'm maybe just unlucky that the battery and clutch switch have gone at the same time and are completely unrelated
