New Driver Insurance Ideas?

Hi all, Senior Daughter has just passed her car test first go, hurrah... So now she's looking for insurance. Any recommendations, or even who to avoid? She's 17, it's a Group 1 motor with her parents as drivers, and we'd consider a spy box if premiums will come down.

I have just been in exactly the same situation, though my daughter has not passed her test yet. I have just paid £635 for her first policy as a learner (fully comp) that will go up to about £1600 (again fully comp) when she passes.

I went with go-girl. She does not have telematics, the difference between a telematics policy and a standard policy was only about £40. There are possible further savings over time, but I want to drive the car too on occasion and don't want to be driving like a nun.

Use the comparison sites, I used confused.com. The price between a fully comp and 3rd party can be quite small, and I found on some cars the fully comp policy was cheaper. I found confused was really good because you can play around with the variables (car, mileage, named drivers etc) and see the effect it has on the cost.

One thing that did make a difference was keeping the car in a garage overnight.

Unfortunately you are going to be hit pretty hard for the first couple of years.

Try a multicar policy. We've had one for two years now with admiral and my son benefits by earning his own NCD. Took about 40% off his previous insurance.

We went with Co-op insurance when our daughter started learning. We were with Saga (being of that age) but they wouldn't allow a young person on the insurance.

I can't remember the exact amount extra we paid when daughter eventually went solo (at 22) but it was was way less than I expected - about £150 - so we didn't even bother with their spy box scheme.

The car is a Yaris 1.0.

Hi, many thanks all. We're with admiral on a multicar policy too, and the quote to insure her for the next two months until the policy runs out was £200, actually cheaper than the best gocompare quote.

So went with the simple option this time, and I have it all to look forward to again in late May, can't wait. Admirals phone this morning was an hours wait then they dropped the line, so some serious teddy-throwing!

Will definitely look at the Coop in May, and thanks re telematics feedback.

PS have dared to wash the winter cr@p off the 100RS, so no doubt it will snow next week!

Grandaughter went with Hastings with a black box fitted.She had her car written off in the first year,not her fault.They provided solicitor and claimed every penny ( & some) off the other driver.Her first year was lowest quote she could find & after excellent scores on the black box her premium halved for this year.Went from £1200ish to £600ish.She can check her scores on line at anytime.Its worked well for her.

I have a couple of mates who got their kids classic cars (Morris 1000 etc) instead of modern hatch backs and they reckoned it was much cheaper again.
