I have been told by the BMW dealer I took the bike to, to investigate the reason for vibration, that providing the timing disc position is approximately correct, the electronic ignition system will automatically ensure timing is right. Is that really correct? If not, is there someone in London or SE who I can rely upon to check it?
The electronic ignition will provide the appropriate advance for the revs beyond tick-over. However, the electronic pick-up, Hall sensor, can vary the timing by about 10 degrees via the slotted mounting plate.
Somewhere on ADVRider (I think) there's a post on why the exact position of the Hall sensor isn't crucial. Here's the 'how to' I used when I changed mine which repeats the assertion. If you want to be particular, just scribe the engine case where the old Hall sensor was, and put the new one back in the same place. http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/Oi ... 20Way.html.
