New Turntable Gromit?

Picked up my Garrard 401 in the early 80's for £50 and spent another £50 on a service, belt and set up with the SME 3009/S2 arm. Put it up against mates' LP12's, an Oracle and a Pink Triangle all through the same amp and speakers and couldn't tell much difference. Been happy with it ever since though it is now through Kef Concord speakers as I have no room for the Quad electrostatics in this house.

401's don't have belts

Cracking turntables, to think that folk were lobbing these into skips only a few years ago, totally ignorant of the massive potential hiding inside them. Good 301's fetch close to £1k now, 401's you're looking at £500+ for a decent one. Still great value compared to a lot of the new stuff though.

Yep, I knew I'd regret selling both of mine even though I got £500 each for them. I would love to have had the space to have made a really good set up out of one of them but shmbo dictated that the HIFI goes in the spare room/office. Funny though, since it's gone up there I listen to and have bought more vinyl than when it was all in the living room.

Ok The hangover was still affecting typing at 3 o'clock - idler wheel / rubber drive wheel or whatever you want to call it.
It is still a great bit of kit.

Ah - the Anna Log.

I once owned a NAS turntable (a Spacedeck) before I went direct drive around 6 years ago. Tom Fletcher (no longer with us, sadly) was a great turntable designer, and having met him on a couple of occasions, quite a character too.

C'man - nice TT the Gyro, it was the deck that made me realise there was life after the LP12. Lovely bit of engineering too, and like Tom Fletcher, John Michell was a real gent, sadly taken from us through ill health.

I'll be sticking with my LP12. I see it only as a device for playing all the vinyl from my 70s-90s collection.

I find I prefer the CD set up I have, especially with remasterd stuff like Led Zep and Hendrix.......

That said - it is still a lovely piece of engineering.
