Hammerite silver smooth spray gives good results. It says to use their primer first, but Ive never bothered and the paint has stayed on just fine.
Be careful how you rub it down, I would avoid a steel wire brush as it can score the alloy.

I did 3 coats of primer and 4 topcoats, 2 vertical and 2 horizontal.
I also got clear lacquer to put over the top but decided against it because it didnt look to interact to well on the test piece I used.
Cleaned the flaking paint off the RH head fins and sprayed these too. You have to know where the new paint is to see the patch.
Heres the thread that covers it:

Not sure about the black paint, resprayed my bar end weights with smootherite black and had poor results even using the self etch primer.

I did mine over the winter months and was able to take time over it, There are also threads on here about spraying fork lowers in situ.BMbler wrote:Geez, that's more of a job for the forks alone, than anticipated....
might leave it for until spring then
Reading through the thread again i said i put 2 coats of clear lacquer on so maybe it was another project that the clear reacted with.
Don't be put off by the amount of work to strip them out. It is took me 2 hours to strip them and about the same to reassemble.
