Standard pipes mod?

Post by Mister C (Marsh) »

Howdo, I'm sure this is an old subject but would really appreciate your advice...
I would like a little more noise from my bike, (just think its to quiet to be safe) at the mo its bog standard and I can't chuck £500 at it for remus tackle. So can I mod the originals, if so how and other than weight is there any other benifit gained by removing the cat.

Many thanks Marsh
er, mmmmm I'll think of something funny soon.

Removing the cat by replacing it with a y-piece is the 1st step to liberating your bikes engine, that step alone will release a little more torque and midrange power, and as a by product, a little more 'zorst note.
Its a no brainer, assuming you can find a Y-piece

As Steve say`s

of all the mods I did on mine ( lennies sprockets / induct, K&N , Y piece, Silencers etc etc) the Y-piece is the most noticable change, really `liberates` the engine.

Will also give you a tad more noise your looking for, go there first..

My first R11 was totally standard except for the Y-piece, ran lovely and still kept up with the other guys no bother.

As them above, I reckon my S was a nicer road bike with std cans and y piece (No Cat). The Remus was a lovely sound but did rob a bit of mid range.

Remus Y-piece...more noise, looks better the the original cat. I found no change in performance at all...good before, still good afterwards.

Regards to all,

Cheers chaps, still not sure :? on single silencer bikes I,ve modded them with an iron bar, feels a bit harsh for the BM. Reall dont want to loose any of the mid range thats where I live most of the time and its such a plus point with the bike.
Once again thanks n regards Marsh

I've just gone back to the standard pipes on my R12S
Got them off ebay cheap.
The Remus sound was appealing in short doses, but on longer trips it became a tedious drone, that rang in my ears for hours afterwards.
Otherwise feels exactly the same but with a better pick up from standstill.
I found before it was a little hesitant.
Now all I hear is the wind whistling over my lid and a gentle thrum from the engine.
Lovely.

I think the standard cans are a pretty good design and I am sure that there is an article on here that concluded that the majority of aftermarket cans reduced power.

I have a Remus road system on mine, its a tad louder than the standard system on my old one.

This may be controversial, but I think keeping the boxer quiet is not a bad idea as its exhaust note isn't all that.

And to think all you needed was a set of decent ear plugs  I love the sound of the Remus silencer. :)

I always wear ear plugs.
Don't get me wrong.
I'm quite partial to the sound of more open pipes.
I had a Guzzi Sport which had twin termigs without baffles, and was a joy to listen too.
The BMW for me was just a horrible drone, but each to their own,

I've never worn ear plugs, AH SAY I'VE NEVER WORN EAR PLUGS!!

I'm a bit of a funny onion. I like to feel the wind pressure on me chest. I prefer lamina flow over me elmet (oo er madam) so don't like fairings all that much. I like to hear the machine working. I don't care for over loud cans on a four but love a decent airbox growl. I am partial to an old big twin with decent "silencers". My R100 has a couple of cheap Chinese short megaphone shaped affairs, you see em on a lot of recent customs, and they sound brilliant. Specially with an open face lid.

Basically I'm punishing me body, I know, but as one who rides mainly for pleasure these days I can afford the indulgence. There's a cost for everything. To enhance the riding experience I suppose you take more of a pummelling. I'm not saying it's big or clever. Just my choice.

You like airbox growl.

Have a pop on a zx-9R or Z1000.

They sound magnificent. 4 pot though.

Just to add to this, is it OK to just change the cat for a y piece and do no further mods to fuelling?

That's one of the things I'm not too keen on too. I've got a full system on mine which makes it sound much better but it's a bit too loud really and still not exactly 'mellifluous' like twins should sound.

I think the 1100S sounds better than the 1200S but I've not gone as far as scientific back-to-back comparisons - I'd probably end up deaf!

Re. the OP, removing the cat is the main thing, you don't really 'need' to do anything else. It gives a better 'feel' and better noise. Of course, a full system is even better but it's all down to budget and not essential.

From what I've read here and on Pelican, and from personal experience, yes*.
