Givi Top box mounting

Post by Motocod »

Hi All,

Just bought a fabulous 1100S fron a fellow forum member. Very pleased indeed, and loving riding it.

The bike came with BMW pannier rails, plus panniers. This means (I believe) that I am unable to mount a Givi top box that I have from my last bike - unless someone can tell me otherwise? Alternatively, what are my other options for a top box? They're handy to have when out and about with the other half, and less instrusive than panniers.

Thanks,

Nik

I have a 2000 R1100s with panniers & Givi rack & top box, didn`t realise there was any problem with fitting both.I am not very clever but did them myself about 12yrs ago, sorry can`t remember the details, age is quite cruel.

You can fit both - using the Givi rack arms for the 1100s.

Givi rails are still available for the R1100S and fit with the BMW panniers i had to modify them a touch due to the way they are made
And they look horrible with the givi rack fitted but look a lot better with a old non fango rack that i had laying around
My bike shines when it rains!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies guys.

To be honest I don't want to change the racks - the Givi ones look awful!

Presumably BMW do a top box mount? Might be the best option for me, and then I can just sell the Givi box.

cheers,

BMW don't do anything other than pannier rails/mounts for the 1100s, I'm afraid.

It was left to 3rd-party makers to fill that void.

Wow, that's surprising - perhaps BMW didn't want it getting too sensible, and wanted to keep it a bit more sporty?

Ah well, thanks for that. Might investigate alternative ways in which to mount my Givi rack.

Thanks!

You buy the givi top box mount (arms, bolts, plate) and fit that in addition to your BMW pannier rails.

What are you calling a "Givi rack'?

The Givi rack being the plastic mounting plate that the top box clips in to. If I can find a way of mounting that on to the bike that doesn't involve having to fit Givi rails then I'm laughing.

Just buy the Givi rails and save yourself a whole heap of hassle.

Slightly annoyingly, Givi discontinued the PLEX tubular pannier mounts, which used to bolt onto the Monorack rails - so I ended up using a universal Wingrack kit to mount my side racks with the Monorack for the topbox.

One thing to note is that Monokey and Monorack plates are different, although they will bolt to the same rail. The Monokey plate mounts about 1 inch further back, which makes it easier to get under the seat and gives pillions a little more space.

Thanks Twinspark.

To be honest, I want to avoid the Givi rails, as they're bloody ugly! Pity that there isn't a more elegant solution, which is why I might consider doing something myself (I'm a design engineer, so feel compelled to tinker with things).

cheers,

Nik

I was going to to just that, we have a plentiful supply of stainless tube and I was going to "knock" something up but it was easier to get the Givi rails as they fit straight out of the box and you can soon take them on and off.

A tour of the bikes parked up at the TT grandstand area during practice and race week - shows just how inventive some people (mostly continental Europeans) are - with racks and mounts to fit sports bikes - so that they can bring them over for the TT.

Some beautifully designed and constructed efforts.

Just been re-visiting this thread - forgot I'd asked in the first place, and just asked again recently in a separate thread!

Thanks again to all who replied - I'll be looking to get the Givi kit to suit the top box I already have.

Is there anyone here who has a Givi top box fitted in conjunction with the BMW pannier rails? Forgive my scepticism, but I'd like to see pictures to confirm it's definitely possible before I spend any time/money...

Answered my own question; I used this thing called a "search engine" whereupon you can look for things on the internet. I found this excellent website known as "Google" that enabled me to do a search for "BMW R1100S with Givi Top Box" which then showed me results of any images that match that criteria. Amazing eh?!

Looks like I'll be ordering some Givi bits then...
