L/H Cam Chain Tensioner Mod
Been reading a little about this mod recently. Without taking everything apart is there a tell tale way to tell if it has been done?
This is the first BMW I've owned, so I have no real frame of reference as to which noises etc are normal & which can be cured.

How hard can it be?

It's a easy enough mod to do but you will need to balance the throttle bodies after doing it, if it has been done you will not get the couple of seconds rattle from the left pot that is normal on start up, is it worth doing? to be honest no it only rattles on start up and only for a few seconds
Hope this helps Dai

The way to tell if it's been done is the head of the bolt is a different size. So if its not been done the bolt size on left and right are the same.. Once done the left is a different size to the right

Well i'm still not convinced it's worth doing, the rattle seems to be the tensioner hitting the adjuster not the chain hitting the chain tunnel no harm seems to be done i get no bits of ally when i do oil changes [yes i did cut a filter open on the first oil change after rebuilding my motor]
also if the rattle stops quickly it proves you have good oil pressure

Balancing the throttles is dead easy...make your own manometer. Plenty of posts on all the forums.chris r wrote:Didn't think about the throttle bodies, that's a bit of a pain. I can't balance those myself, so I think it will be off to the shop for that particular mod.
Shame there is nobody decent to take it in West London, Jap & German in Bermondsey it may have to be.

I checked the balance after I had fitted the tensioner. It was still the same. I didn't actually touch anything that would change the balance.
Is it worth doing? well it will run fine without, BUT I didn't like the rattle on start up, It's a BMW, such noises should not be tolerated LOL
People not in the know would say your engine is F@$*ed
By the way, Motorworks will sell you a second hand one for next to nothing, so why not?

As I recall they're not that expensive, so not worth using a secondhand one.chris r wrote:Does anyone know the BMW part number for this part is? I've found it on the Motorworks site but I wanted to try a breaker to get it a wee bit cheaper. Just want to make sure I get the right one.
I did the mod on my R1150RS and it was well worth it. Surprisingly on the 1100S which is actually older it doesn't rattle at all on start up.
Regrds to all,
