ERRR - no theyre not....they are taperedThe Teutonic Tangerine wrote:What's all this talk of tapered needle rollers. The bearings as fitted are Not tapered thay are just plain old needle roller bearings
They are listed as a plain bearing (size wise) on the BMW fiche and look like a normal needle roller when the two halves are put together BUT they do have a taper.
Have a close look at em next time

Also have a look at this extract taken off the ADV Rider site
8 year old post, but here we go. 2002 1150GS:
I put 47500 mile on my original pivot bearings and then for not really any good enough reason I put in some Rubber Chicken bronze taper bearings in. Well , they lasted 10,000 miles and I am going back to what our German Masters tell us to use. I got the FAG 10-6465A bearings, but it is not obvious which way they are installed. It looks like the inner race OD is just a hair larger on one side. Based on that I think that is the side that points to the outside of the FD housing. Writing on the bearings to the inside. I could try to push the inner and outer race apart to see which way the taper points, but it is a sealed bearings and they are pretty tightly locked together.
Just checking, can somebody confirm this is the right way to do it?
UPDATE: found the answer, this is the right way, once I started pounding on one of the bearings to get it in, it did fall apart and the taper is as described above.
Epic saga of the paralever bearings
Having had at least 4 sets of these damn bearings fitted, to fix a varierty of rear end woes (steady there guys!) the design has to be part of the problem...these bearings swing beack and forth in use just a few degrees -nothing like a one-way rotation duty.
If I'd known years back how many sets of needle rollers (yes, they are tapered!) I would later buy/fit, then I would have gone the Rubber Chicken Racing way -see http://rubberchickenracinggarage.com/bushings.html
Fingers crossed, I have moly grease, an infra-red thermometer, heat gun, and don't want to go in there again...but if there is a next time, I'll buy this tool as well: http://bit.ly/UUcTZH to guarantee that I get the bearing preload right.

BTW, It is No.5 in this view we're talking about is'nt it?

Mr. Spock is my role model so be advised; I possess no (discernible) sense of humour.
It's all VFR (DCT) round here now. STILL missing my 1100s tho.

saw a tip for removing needle roller swing arm bearings - it was commented on that there wasn't a great deal of metal to use a drift so a rawl bolt was expanded slightly so as to be able to use a larger drift to extract the bearing - s'pose it could be used to remove cartridge bearings as well

No. They locate in the holes where the bevel box bolts to the swing arm.pins 10 and 8 fix the bevel box to the swing arm using the paralever bearings. The bearing are not shown in the pic.el-nicko wrote:Well they don't do they; Going on those grooves.nab 301 wrote:Let's see yours then..el-nicko wrote:Er, they may be 'Tapered' but they don't look as if they've done much 'Rolling' of late.

Hey ooop,
Not part number 5. They aren't shown on that drawing, but the bearings in question sit in the final drive and rotate around trunions 8 and 10 on that drawing.
Interesting discussion re. needle rollers (tapered or not!) versus bushes. I've experimented before with making and using bushes; Phosphor-bronze and also more modern kevlar composites. I'm not convinced that this would be the right application for a bush. Some easy way of purging and regreasing the bearings in-situ would be good maybe. Problem with either is that a small bit of crud in there will cause lots of damage.... Not like a deep grove bearing.... No room for it to hide!
Most of the play in mine has come from the bearing turning on the outer trunion. I'll take pics later.
Something that's come out of this........ I NEED a motorcycle lift!
Going to look at one later
EDIT...... must type faster!
