R1200s front engine paint touch up

Post by StreetFlatTwin »

Hi my bike has had a wee bit of corrosion on the front cover which has been fairly well touched up by the previous owner (Airbus from here) but there are just a couple of wee bits that need fixing-so I'm looking for an idiots guide to doing this!!

Prep work thats required and with what?
What primer is needed (is one needed???)
What paint to use for the final black topcoat??

I did a search and found Hammerite silver is good so is the black a good match??

As always thanks!!

Prep work as always is the key if the paint on there is lifting it will all need to come off if it is chipped you should get away with touching it up

If it needs to come off and you have access to a compressor look here

If you use hammerite use the smooth as the hamered finish looks horible

Myself i would look at BBQ paint the Plasticoat range looks good and seems to last well

Finish the job off by fitting a fender [how i hate that word] extender so your newly finished front cover will stay good for years to come

Hope this helps Dai

Thanks Dai
Yeah it's only needing touched up round the edges where the bolt go. It's not too bad but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my bikes. Is there any special primer or something needed befor painting? What is the front cover made of Aluminium or some other alloy??

I have bought a winter hack so the R12S might be getting parked up for the winter and ill do all the wee jobs then.

But saying that I can't decide if I can go all winter without riding it!!

As far as i know the casing's are aluminium as to special primers i'm not to sure, someone here will be able to tell you if it would be needed or not, i would imagin that if it was pollished then yes you will need a primer but if rough[keyed] you would be ok, there are lot's of engine paints out there i would think you will find one that can be applied to bare ally
For touching up small nicks and marks i have used nail varnish in the past with good results i usually have some clear around and find it usefull for covering bare metal nicks and also have used it as a get you home on wireing[spelling] before now

Etch primer if it's aluminium.

I use U-Pol Acid 8 etch primer - available from Halfrauds

Try a satin black top coat or the plasticote BBQ stuff mentioned earlier which is a bit more matt and needs gently heat curing

That etch primer looks good

I have found that the accrilic paints[rattle cans] available from your local motor factor stick well to ally, unlike the old celulose baced ones, the only downside is they are not resistant to petrol

To cure the BBQ paint if the cover's on the bike i would think running the motor for a few min's would do that [not sure but that's what i would do]

If the front case is off the bike run it through the dishwasher first [make sure your other half's out when you do this] it's a big lump to fit in the oven but you should be able to do it with a heat gun

Remember Dave knows far more than me about shiney bikes Dai
