R1200S panniers buying a replacement advice

Post by StreetFlatTwin »

As some of you might be aware one of my panniers from my R1200S decided it had had enough and made a break for freedom......never to be seen again :-(

Anyway I lost the right hand pannier (including the waterproof liner) but I still have all of the fitting kit etc.

I have been pricing a new one from Motorworks and the listing says I need to buy the pannier AND - a set of bolts AND a lock set.

Can anybody tell me where the bolts fit and will I need them??

Also I will need to buy one lock barrel (probably only sell them as a pair!!) but can that one be made to work with my ignition key or is it worth keeping the pannier locks different (ie so your not giving a key which fits your bike should you sell the panniers separately (which I probably will when I swap bikes)

Ay advice or thoughts please?

I could wait until tomorrow and call Motorworks, but I am an impatient git!!

I would speak to motorworks direct on the phone myself, they really are very helpful, the part numbers for all those parts are individual, so you should just have to pay for the parts that you require.

Hello,

The bolts are in the fitting kit which secures the lower rubber mount which goes over the fitting rail on the bike and allows for some adjustment (apparently so they don't fall off?) so you will need them as well as the lock set. As we know these are different from the K1200/1300 cases although they look the same so relatively rare second hand.

Best regards,

David

Hello,

Not sure what Motorworks will charge they are usually pretty good but I do use a "Tame" BMW dealer BMW Cotswold Motorrad - John Wood is the parts man and he will discount as much as he can for you either by mentioning my name (David Walker) or the EuroKclub forum. Worth a go or even eBay.de as the euro exchange rate is not too bad at the moment.

Hope you get it sorted - Your experience made me go out and check mine were a good secure fit

Best regards,

David

Thanks for the tips there appreciated.

Mine were a good fit but as I left fully loaded the wife had parked her car too close so I couldn't squeeze through with it's fat arse panniers on! So I popped them off and then once I had risen past popped them back on -obviously not correctly-D'oh!!

I was thinking of buying a rape alarm (the type with the pull out pin) and attaching this so if they ever popped off again I would get a warning...Or a couple of LED's on the dash green (there still there) and red if they disappear???
