MOT strife

Post by Merecat »

After longer than I care to admit out of the saddle. Took the bike out for a bimble down to the local MOT station.
Since the last MOT (at the same place) I have fitted longer front brake lines and lifted the bars over the top yoke.

The bike passed with two advisorys

1) Handlebars fitted incorrectly/ no securing lock bolts fitted

2) Forks raised through the top yoke to accomodate high bars. Steering/geometry may be affected.

The examiner also added that if he could have found a category on the test that dealt with this he would have failed it, which I find difficult to believe. There must be a "modifications likely to compromise safety" section, if not there should be!!
After speaking to the examiner and explaining the front setup on BMs and that the fork tube was just that, it was clear that my time would have been more wisely used explaining string theory to my back tyre.

So. The bars are above the yoke and I have an MOT with advisorys.
What are the implications, particularly if i have to make an insurance claim?
I suspect that if I want to continue using this MOT station I will have to

a)Put the bars back under the yoke
b)Get the BMW comfort bar kit
c)get barbacks (send some FOC Randy and Ill road test them) :D

Anyone else had similar?

Wont effect the geometry because of the telelever. From an MOT perspective he's correct about the bars

Only a problem if you bin the bike, I would think :(

It would probably prompt the assessor to look closer at the bike than he might normally do?

Then - you may find you're on your back feet with a claim, I think.

You live and learn. I'd always thought that raising the bars above the yoke was an 'official' alternative position.

BMW do a bar above the Yoke, I have seen them on the German ebay site when I was
looking for some to put above the yoke and the only difference that
I could see was the the lug for bolting them under was not there !!

Which was the point I made to the tester.
No prob. If I go there again the bars will be in the correct position, for how long it takes its a, easy fix

Mine passed OK last time with the bars above the yoke...in fact the chap helped me re-route the throttle cable since it was pulling on full lock.

And it does NOT alter the steering geometry.

This guy clearly didn't understand how the telelever system works. Ill take F90x's point that from a MOT perspective he is correct about the bars,

however the guy who's R6 was done before mine was given tape to put over the Not for Road Use on his exhaust :?

Bars above the yolk is an official option but with the correct comfort bars fitted. They have a lug that seats into a slot on the top yolk. I have them on mine

.. me too.

Agree about std bars above yoke comments.
.. tho can't really see a prob.. long as everything is tightened up... you could make a bracing bar to attach to the lugs that originally bolted to the undeside of the yoke.. just not v. pretty.

so if you buy proper clip-ons that don't have lugs ... what then??
The guy is a knob.
Find another bike shop.

I had the bars on my S like yours for 125K miles. Never had a tester even notice!

mine has passed the last 2 tests fitted with the standard bars above the yoke. Not even mentioned.

As long as they are securely attached there is no issue.

It's not his job to state whats right or wrong in his oppinion. Are the bars securely fixed, YES! can you move em, NOT A CHANCE!

in the old days thats how "clip on's " were attached.

Like Blackal said, only perhaps a problem if you bin the bike. If you did that, the bloody handlebars would be the least of my worries.
