Getting at the front brake switch

Hi everyone
I've got a problem where the brake light is constantly on. Having searched the forum I have disconnected the rear brake switch to see if this is the cause but the light stays on. I want to try the same with the front. The wiring seems to dissapear under the tank. Do I need to remove the tank to disconnect the switch?
Also
To remove the brake switch from the switch gear, the manual seems to suggest I need to remove the twist grip, is this strictly necessary or can I get away without doing it?
Thanks in advance
Ian.
