I took the tail rack off, shortly after cos I thought the topbox looked crap on the bike (36 ltr Givi). I only use the panniers (with city lids) when I absolutely have to now.............

yeah, a BCR doesnt really suit a top box, or panniers for that matter.
How many bikes you got then?

Don't sit on the fence now!

They serve a purpose - to allow the bike to be used as a sports-tourer. Get to the destination, ditch them and head out for a toodle around the countryside. You wouldn't want to hang those sh*ty oxford panniers on one would ya?

The bike is a great sports-tourer and I've done 20,000 on it alone in the last 3 years (plus the mileage on the others) - so what's worse?

a) Sticking panniers/topbox on it and using it?

b) Keeping it in the garage and only clocking up 1,000 miles per year?

I bought the citylids off ebay and found that they were the exact blue of the bike - result! :D

How many bikes? Only the ones in the sig line below

(guess you don't think much of this either :? )

No not really, funny thing is the mamola reps dont look too bad to me with panniers, but the later ones like yours, I really do think it spoils the look although the city lids on yours are definately an improvement to the Nigerian arse look the big ones give.

Spot on about the Oxford panniers though mate

Can't see the problem myself, as Blackal says if he wants to get somewhere far he's got the capacity and when he gets there he just clips them off the bike. Even with them on it looks no better or worse than any other R1100s The BMW rails are so unobtrusive anyway - it's one of the things helped me choose it over other bikes. Had bikes in the past fitted with Nonfango/Givi racks and side rails and when the cases weren't on, ie 48 weeks of the year the bikes back end looked like an advanced meccano set :)

think you're right about the Mamola BCR/panniers, Tim

I can manage with just a tailpack for the weekend, but a week away requires the panniers.
