thinking of a r1100s

Post by steveg »

Hi all ,

thinking of buying a R1100s , budget max 3k

Nearest BMW is Clarkes at Rednal ( near Birmingham) , any one know what they are like to deal with ?

general info for running costs ( do 20k a year ):
service costs for R1100's ?
touring tyres life eg Metz z6's

gonna get a test ride booked

was thinking of a VFR800 , however test rode one & it did not float my boat , currently run a sv650s , great bike however need a bigger bike ( I'm 16 stone ) and the sv won't cope with a pillion as well

Cheers Steve

Steve, I'm a 20 stone lard arse & my R1100s has no trouble with me & my much slimmer & far prettier wife. I swapped from a H*nda CBR600F to this & I won't be going back - I can't comment on servicing etc... as I haven't had mine done yet, or the life of the tyres - because I've only managed 100 miles on the new ones :? - but I won't be getting rid of mine ever - at all - never - not in this life - while I've got breath in my body - or a hole in my arse- I think you know what I'm saying.

Regards from the chubby one - Neil.

Nice one Neil , its great when you love your bike , I loved all mine even the ones which were'nt that great eg MZ ETZ125 !

having a scan round at the moment for a used R1100S, they do seem to keep their price well , so my budget of 3k don't look too rosey.

Cheers Steve

Wow - wait a miniute - I would keep that one under your hat if I were you...

I bought mine from a guy on ebay called Steve (usename: bidforbikes) I can't speak highly enough of this guy - he is as genuine as you're ever going to get - he has some real bargains from time to time & well within your £3000 budget - well worth a look. Plus he will deliver it from his place in London to front door.

Hi Steve, welcome on board. As has been said before..........do it. :D

£4999 seems pretty high. There have been some lovely BCR bikes on here for that kind of money lately.

I think that a budget of 3K should be fine for picking up a good, older R1100s from a private seller.

I was in the exact same boat as you 2 years ago; I had been head down and arse up on Jap rockets for over 25 years before I was able to extract fore-mentioned head from fore-mentioned arse and go for my R1100s.

I joined here and tried to glean all the info I could before finding one for sale in Nottingham for my budget at that time which was £3500. 2 years on I cant see any reason why you cant get a very good, clean example for under 3K.

Remember that what is deemed to be high milage on other makes mean bugger-all to most BM's. Mine has just turned 32k and its running better then ever.

It is simply the best bike I have ever owned or had the pleasure of riding. It is not super-fast but the delivery and ability to hold progresive speed is enough alone to bring a smile to my face every time I take it out, whether that be for an arse-slapping blast around the Scottish Highlands or a sedate 2-up tour of Europe complete with big panniers and tank bag. :D

There are many guys on here who have decades of experience and I am sure they will be along in a short time to cast pearls of wisdom your way.

Good luck in the hunt.

Hi
I bought my S from clarkes in 1999 secondhand.I couldnt find a used one private anywhere at the time.I had 2 test rides, one for a couple of hours and the other for a day.I was convinced after the full day that the bike was right for me.I would keep scanning the web and MCN for a private sale.Although its not really the time of year to sell, give it a couple of months and people will be putting them up for sale. You could try and blag a test ride on the one they have.I,m sure they would like a POTENTIAL sale this time of year.Make sure you get at least a couple of hours or more to give yourself chance to bond with the bike. You should be able to pick up a early S 98 ,99 ,2000 maybe for your outlay.

Once you have had one you will find it very difficult to think of any other bike which has the same or similar qualities. Quite unique and very addictive.

Devil's advocate here.

For a start you are asking the question on an enthusiasts' site - what kind of response do you really expect? Note that there are quite a few on here who no longer ride the S, either the 1100 or the 1200. It depends on your requirements and previous experience(s).

They're not top-endy, nor particularly powerful; the screen gives noise to some but not others (but so do many faired bikes); yes, they are generally reliable but can be expensive to service and/or maintain; shaft is supposedly reliable but long-term failures can add up to being no cheaper than replacing c&s; vibrations are love-it-or-loathe it, as is the switchgear.

Ultimately the only way for you to answer this question is to get a decent test ride on one. It should be faster than the SV650, but it won't blow your socks off and scream "Buy me!" Indicators come with familiarity but many people still hit the left indicator in anger instead of the horn.

Panniers fit on easily and the bike still looks good with them off. Heated grips are a bonus. Hit the search for anything else.

Hi I kinda guest that you would all love the R1100S as its a owners site .
However after reading through a lot of posts , its a very honest site detailing problems that you have suffered .
I always go for a long test ride before buying a replacement , and try at least 2 different bikes for comparison .
I am not a speed manic , I value reliabilty the most in a bike
Will get a test ride sorted

Hi steve

Well I sold a TT600 and couldn't decide what bike to get, While looking around a few bike dealers I got to sit on a R1100s and found it a really comfortable. I found one on ebay 53MY 15K £3500 bid and won! no test ride or anythink.

I spent the first couple of weeks wondering if I had done the right thing after 6 months ownership I would say I definately did make the right decision.

The Bikes comfortable for long trips, has a good turn of speed and the handling is sublime IMHO!

Test ride one you will be pleasantly surprised!! :D
