i am going to doing the 12,000 service over the winter but before i start i need to get the tools together to do the job.
got the torque wrench, feeler blades and oil filter tool.
now thinking about the drain plugs for the fluids.what size allen keys do i need etc?
any tips would be appreciated.
as far as tb balancing i will be taking it in for that job.
thanks paul,i agree the balancing does look easy, may well be adventurous and give it a go.i was more after the allen key sizes for the engine oil drain plug and gearbox drain plug.i will have to buy these before i start.
i recently posted the threads on valve adjustment for dummies and throttle body adjustment for dummies and it was this that gave me the idea to do my own for the first time.i am not the most mechanically minded person on the planet.
Most of the bike comes to bits with the tools under the seat... The only tricky one is the gearbox oil drain plug, which is a bugger to get at. It's a 14mm allen key size, but difficult to get a regular sized allen key into, due to the frame getting in the way. Either cut down a 14mm allen key to fit, or cut off a short length and use a 14mm spanner to turn it.
cheers,
Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
You can buy sump plug sets nowhere days with various sizes, use a ring spanner and not an open end,the little gem!!!,work out how your going to drain the oil out and into what, cuz it runs onto the frame and makes a right mess,i cut the top and bottom off a coke can,the sleeve that is left, cut that, top to bottom, roll it out,and put a V crease in it,when you've undone the sump plug to the last couple of threads, hold the coke can in one hand and unscrew with other, assuming you've got something else to drain in into!!!,bit Heath Robinson, but i've had the same piece of coke can for 7 years!!!
if you were not that far away from me we could meet and do the services togehter as i will do the 24k service on my S for the first time...
btw. i ordered all parts from motorworks and everything arrived within 2 days perfectly....

Iv'e got a cut down 14mm sump plug allen key that does the gear box drain plug a treat. If your stuck, send me a pm with your details and you can have a borrow.
I did my 12K service not long ago, piece of pi$$.
Cheers, Cobbster.
PS. Where did you get your twinmax from? I need one to complete my service.

Have to say this 12,000/24,000 is all tosh really,do the things when the bike needs e'm,first time my tappets were touched were at 17,000,i change plugs when i can feel they gone off, filters when their dirty, gearbox and tranny oil when i feel like it!!,oil change the same although it's rare to go over 4,000,do a couple of things do the rest another day,it's a lot less bother
The only hassle is the fuel filter, but i found that interesting to do,don't bother with the quick release connectors you don't need e'm( I fitted e'm!!!),buy two plastic pinch pliers to nip the fuel pipes off with while you take the tank off.
