I used the Calais to Narbonne service a year or two back. If you go with another bike, it's the same price as a car and 4 people. It was around £500 single for the bikes and 4 people in a private cabin, with no sink.

It's basic. Think very old carriages, and 70's British Rail Buffet bar. The Calais route is ran as a charter service by an English company.

A friend often uses the Paris to SOF service, as it's ran by French rail, and is a standard timetables service, and can be a lot cheaper, but you need to get to Paris.

I can try and dig out more info this evening if anyone is interested.

:( I forgot to mention that the more that travel the price stays the same, but they don't supply the 2 birth couchettes any longer so it'll have to be the 6 birth cabin,if you can get that many bikers to go the price isn't to much really

I went by autozug last year and it was bloody brilliant
Went from Dusseldorf to munich and back to dortmund.
Really effective way of busting the miles to teh decent roads and still making good time, without having to spend money on accomm etc for 2 nights also

Train:

Especially given as blasting down to austria in a day knackers your tyres with 1000 plus miles (1100 from here to Lofer) of centre wear, Would rather get to the decent roads without it.

Sorry I didnt mean there arent great roads within a very short distance of Calis etc, but in my trip I went to the Austrian Alps and we did the trip becuase it saved us 2 night b and b costs and also covered about 1200 miles in total, saving wear and tear. Made sense travelling whilst asleep
