What final drive oil?

OK guys,

I bought a 01 R1100s 15K miles. I changed all the fluids right off. The book said to use 90w hypoid in the final drive. When I went to the dealership they insisted that I needed the 85-140 synthic for the gearbox and final. So thats what I used.

Please set me straight on what oil to use in the final drive on my 01

The manual says Hypoid 80 - 90 weight oil and I think you will find most of the people on the site use this type of oil. Don't know where your dealer is coming from but it would be interesting to know their reason for using a different oil to the recomended type in the manual.

Any EP gear oil will do - The main spec you must be certain to use is GL5

Most of the EP 80/90 multi-grades are only GL4
