Final Drive

Post by paulR »

I had some side to side play in the rear wheel of my 1150GS a while back. I removed the locknut on the final drive and tightened the allen bolt, but I noticed when I tightened it, it felt a bit rough. I've only done a few hundred miles since and when I changed the final drive oil last weekend, the old oil was very metallic and there was some fine swarf on the magnetic drain plug. It looks like the bearings have worn a bit, but have I got away with it? Or do I need to change the bearings pronto and if so, can anyone give me some instructions?
Cheers chaps :D

they can be adjusted but they will give up in the end, the swarf in the oil sounds pretty terminal.. would suggest you change the bearings.

I got mine done recently by SED but if you run a search on here it should throw up some tips as it is (apparently) not a complex job.

I phoned a mechanic recommended by someone on the GS club who is not far from me, and he's going to check it out for me tomorrow. I was thinking that the metal in the oil was from the bit I tightened up, but I don't think it can be as that bearing doesn't run in oil.
