Yes had one a few years ago before I went into a Jap sports bike phase after which I came back to BMWs with the R1100S.
The RS is obviously more touring orientated and is a bigger, softer handling bike. It's not as chuckable as an S but with the Telever up front it handles well and predictably. In the hands of the right person it can still suprise a sports bike rider with the torque delivery out of corners. It can deliver a "progressive" ride and any time you might lose to an S on a long run will be made up through less petrol stops, as it has better range, plus you can keep going longer because you're more comfy. Great for continental trips.
Engine and mechanics are virtually the same, like any of the oilheads. The cosmetic longevity is better than the S.
Definitely worth a test ride if you see one you fancy.

I had one for a couple of months before my S. It had a hard courier life and had clocked 100k miles, when it started to jump out of gear. Probably almost as real-world fast as an S, unless you're a real loony. It was actually quite nice to have a softer, more floaty ride - mine had a Remus pipe on it and it went bloody well.
I once used it to ride from Peterborough to London, then to Portsmouth and Lymington, to Birmingham and then back to London in a day. Amazing. The fairing works excellently, you get very good economy and it is very confidence-inspiring for such a relatively big bike. Bar-mounted mirrors make them a cracker in town too. For long runs and general-purpose use, a good bet.
They seem to hold their value well though, and pre-96 models have very weak gearboxes. Buy a well-loved example in good nick with medium miles and you can't go wrong.

Mine's an 1150RS and it's fine. Handles well, comfortable, stops on a sixpence if you have to, 200mi+ range, reasonable weather protection. Only real niggle is the panniers - they hold b_all unless you have the touring lids on, but with touring lids it's a right barge in town (OK for motorway filtering). Have a look at http://www.bikersoracle.com/rs/forum/ for more info.

Also had a R-RS for 3 years and obviously liked it some since I put 100K on it...
The R-RS is better than the S when it comes too two-up comfort, tankrange (+50 miles),has practical underseat storage and a factory rack in the back as also the centerstand still works with th shorter paraleverarm.I would say still a very capable bike for sporty riding and touring. The S really only looks better and the handling is a tad better but otherwise they should have combined the best of both bikes and they would have had a bike that really does it all.Unfortunately the R1200ST was not this bike...

R 1100RS
I had an SE version for 5 years and I have to say it was a great bike in terms of comfort when touring my girlfriend found it very good and never complained about it. In fact when I traded it in for a K1200S she went mad as it was so uncomfortable. Now I have the 1100S her view is that its better but not as good as the SE. In normal road conditions there is very little between them in terms of performance. A very cheap mod is to fit the intake tubes from the GS range motorworks till do this. I think my R1100RS SE is still available from Rainbow.

Wasn't the R1150RS the top rated bike in RIDERPOWER a couple years ago?I think they called it the thinking man's sportbike.High praise indeed...My girlfriend doesn't complain about the S but we sat better on the R-RS since the seat is not sloped forward to the tank. With Ohlins,a Remus wihout premuffler/cat,shorter paraarm, shorter 3.0 reardrive and solid mounted handlebars it was fun and practical. The advantage of the S that it is even a little bit more fun to ride and look at but also a little less practical...BMW should cmbine the best features of both bikes and in combination with the new 1200cc boxer would make a superb bike...But that would probably be too easy...
