Just been trying to fit one of these that arrived from Motorworks today,however got a slight problem.
The bar that goes across the bottom pipe that you attach the rubber bungs to appears to be to long? and will not fit between the lugs unless I cut it down. Is this a Remus flaw? Also I have a BCR without a centrestand, so should I just grind off the bracket on the Remus pipe?

I had exactly the same problem with mine! I cut about 5mm off each end of the bar to make it fit. It certainly would seem to be a Remus flaw.

I think the normal way is to grind/cut down the right hand end of the bar - that's certainly what I had to do to get it to fit even remotely squarely. The left hand end didn't need touching.

You might also want to take a dremel to the welds/pipe ends inside where the two inlet branches join - mine were a real mess. It's a very poorly put-together bit of kit and had I seen it before buying I'd never have bought it - I'd have gone for a Laser instead.

Oh, as for the sidestand bracket it looks horrible and if I'd realised this I'd have ground it off before fitting. No reason to leave it on - it doesn't serve any useful purpose if you haven't got a side stand. I just haven't got around to lying on the ground to grind mine off yet....

I had to cut the bar on both of ours. I also noticed that it was not quite in the correct position so the bits of rubber moved on a ride causing vibration. In the end I cut the bar completely off both bikes and have ridden like that for 2 years now with no ill effects.

I think I read somewhere that the frame design changed slightly, and that there are certain ages of 1100S that the Remus Y fits without modification - any others require the attention of a grinder.

I don't think I'm imagining that, but it's possible.....

I have an early version without a bar, fits snug, no vibe. I've kept a close watch as I was unsure about the security, but has not moved an m.m. So full confidence provided the system is serviceable and fitted correctly.

Don't know about frame changes but our bikes are a W reg (2000?) and a 2004. They were almost exactly the same and the remus still required the bar to be cut off.

My experience is that the bar supplied with the Laser Y-pipes is also too long (and the wrong shape).

The Laser Y's that I've seen don't have a cross-bar at all - they just have a hanger that attaches to the LH pillion footrest hanger mounting. They also don't have the untidy centre-stand rest.

Actually it was more the quality of the joints/welding that I was criticising with the Remus - the fact that it didn't fit without surgery was just an annoyance.

I also found that the vertical link pipe (between Y and can) that came with the Remus Y seemed slightly too short, although now I've fitted a Laser can instead of the OE one I've managed to make the whole thing fit together better so maybe it was just that things weren't aligned properly before.

The problems with the Laser stemmed from the fact that they didn't supply a clamp between the up pipe and the cans and they made the up pipe marginally too small. So when you used the standard BMW clamp - just as it as it started to tighten, the bolt in the clamp would 'bottom' out. So everything felt nice and tight. But it wasn't. Sooner or later the joint would loosen sufficiently for the cans to slide off the back, down onto the the tyre and bounce back up to destroy part or most of the rear end - depending how fast you were going at the time.

Laser had taken the decision not to put a support bar on their Y-piece because they felt that without the weight of the cat it was not necessary. When they found out about the cans coming off they decided that perhaps they were wrong and put the support bar on. When the cans still kept coming off they then put a tie bar between the cans and the underside of the rear frame - kind of defeating the point of having the cans rubber mounted. That seemed to work (well it would - wouldn't it?) so pretty much soon after that they dropped the support bar. I would suspect that there are still some unsold ones out there with the support bar (too long and wrong shape).

They could have solved it by supplying a suitable clamp or by making the up pipe the correct outside diameter. The other method was simply to fit a shim (Coca-Cola tin) and continue to use the BMW clamp.

Their welding was not much, if any, better than Remus particularly at the joint between the front pipes and the Y-piece.

But that joint is what you must keep an eye on, particularly if you have had to pull everything together.
