While on a fishing trip to the Republic of Ireland I was pulled over by a hand held gun holding PC indicated 127kph in 100kph area.

Had a pleasent chat, showed him the driving licence, he wrote down the details and those of the car, I agreed to take it easy, and I was on my way again. No caution

Thinking how lucky I was until yesterday a fixed penalty notice arrived. 80 euros and 2 penalty points. Please send cheque or visa number and confirm driving liscence details.

Can live with the e80 but how do the points work? Do they count in the UK ( that would make 5 in total ) ? need to declare to insurance etc .


Any one know the legal position or got previous who can advise on: re no caution, ignoring it , pay up shut up etc

As it stands at the moment there is no transfer of endorsments bewtween the UK and Eire though they are looking to introduce this in the near future. If you don't hold a licence issued by an Irish local authority they can't endorse it, however records are alledgedly kept of all foreign transgressors incase they ever chose to live in Eire.

If you are driving on a foreign driving licence in Ireland and acquire penalty points here, you will receive the normal statutory fine but the penalty points will not be added to your foreign driving licence. If you subsequently exchange your foreign driving licence for an Irish driving licence, your Irish penalty points will then be activated on your new Irish driving licence is the official line.

If you're looking to return to Eire I'd just pay the fine and leave it at that tbh, wouldn't give the license details and see what happened. Chances are they'll chase you for the money ( debt collection agency will probably 'buy it out' and there's bound to one with UK/Eire branches ) and at some point they'll have a system where the next time you're over there they'll nab you for the money.

Disclaimer : I'm an arse at the best of times and my advice should not be taken prior to operating heavy machinery or driving, or when there is anyone else over the age of 3 with an opinion. Opinions are like arseholes ; everybodys got one, so either make your own mind up or consult a solictor ( perhaps your insurance also gives a legal helpline ???? ) However they cannot at this time endorse your UK license.

I'd check firstly whether they can impose teh points and secondly find the ruling on whether they actually need to caution you over there.

I was caught speeding in Ireland a couple of years ago and received a fixed penalty notice. I chose to ignore it and never heard anything more. I don’t speed over there any more though, mobile units with laser guns is just cheating.

As I go every year and I am unlikely to change my car in the next couple of years, I am minded to pay the 80 euro and forgett the liscence details, as I do not want hasle on re entry and they could well have number plate recognition re terrorists etc.

Yep that'd be my choice. I'm back over on Friday so I'll have a word with the local Garda and see if knows any more.

I'd cock a complete deaf'un,they've got no jurisdiction over here and the the thought their going to chase you for 80 euros!!!,were's the profit margin in that???,how the hell does the copper even know if you gave him a dodgy license,with mumbo jumbo address???enjoy it while you can it's a luxury that ain't going to last for ever.

I got pulled by the law in Wales a few ago,copper was saying about all the hassle they have with foriegn drivers here in the UK on their way to Holyhead,they nick e'm on the spot and take e'm to court the following morning,otherwise they haven't got a hope of doing anything.

I've set speed cameras of in Germany,France and Holland,if you get pulled on the spot,then it's pay up time,'Do not pass go do not collect 200 pounds so to speak,you either pay in cash or credit card,but no one has the ability to put points on your license.

On the way back from Le-Mans this year with Lloyd,just outside St Malo the bloody thing was on top of the armco barrier and lit the road up when it went off!!!

theasedog (paul) seems to have it all covered. I know plenty of irish licence holders who have been pulled in wales and threatened with a court appearance , but normally they've just been(deliberately) delayed long enough to miss ferries / connections etc. Points exchange will be on, prob within the next year.
