...euh. Noticed I'd lost my rear break yesterday morning. In the afternoon, on my way back home, the ABS lights started flashing. Had a look at it and saw this:



The brake claw (?) just broke off. My mechanic never 'd seen anything like that before (not seeing a 130.000 km motorcycle that often...). Sais it's probably caused by corroded alumunium due to wheather (rain and road salt, I guess), wear and tear.



Some molten aluminium stuck at the rim.

Repair estimated costs: € 250,- brake, € 150,- disk, € 250,- work.

Lucky escape! (except in the finance dept) - but don't understand the high labour charge?

I would have ventured that the problem (a fracture) would have started in the root of one of the threads on the aluminium caliper, but the molten aluminium on the rim is a puzzler??

Have the pads been rubbing continuously to heat up to such a degree? From the pic - the disc looks blued.

I'm sure you could get a 2nd hand caliper/new disc for a lot less and fit it yourself?

We'll that's my estimation, but you're right: it'll probably take 1 or 2 hours to do the job, so more likely to be € 100,- € 150,-

Hmm, looks like the right hand thread (and maybe the left one too) actually broke off, while the one in the middle overheated and then came off.

I guess so. The brake pads where squeezed into the disk while the brake cilinder encountered no counterforce normally excited by the part that came off.

You're right about that. Could do that, but prefer (in this case) a new one. I'd rather not save on savety (brake).

Check out the mighty ebay. There is a clean looking rear caliper on there at the mo for £10 with a couple of days to go. Search R1100S.
