Play In Rear Wheel

Hi Guys, I have a May 2001 R1100s bought from new and done 18,600 miles, when it is on its centre stand I have noticed there is a slight amount of side play on the rear wheel but no vertical play but if I hold onto the silencer down pipe I can't feel anything, do I take it then the only place it can be is in the centre stand pivots and there's nothing to worry about, reason I am asking this is that I am about to spend a fortnight touring Scotland, is there anything else I should be checking and before I panic too much.

Hi
Get the rear of the ground.Grab the rear wheel at the 3 and 9 oclock postion.Any play?If so it will be rear paralever bearings.Do a search and all will be revealed on how to remedy.

While it may have been restricted to early model GS Adventures (mine is a 2003) the final drive bearings were the subject of a recall. We were told to check for play in the rear wheel and there was. When checking it out the final drive bearings in mine had in fact collapsed.
The dealer performed a no cost repair but it didn't take, they were replaced a second time but this time the crown gear destroyed itself which led to a third repair. This time the entire final drive was replaced with a new unit...no trouble since.
I haven't heard of this happening to anyones S model though.

Many thanks for the replys guys, Gus thats what I was worried about but as it is oly just recognisable I will still goahead with my little trip that I have planned for early September, I have ruled out rear bearings as it is only horizontal play, if it was both vertical and horizontal then the tripn would be cancelled and the backend stripped. I just wished I had checked it when I fitted new bushes to the center stand earlier this year when one of the bolts sheared, ah well more checks to be done, many thanks guys.

Put the rear brake on and try for movement
If it still moves it's the paralever bearings. = 5 minutes work to adjust them.
If it stops it's the FD crown wheel bearing = 1 hours work to replace.
