SW Motech tank bag

Has anyone used one of the SW Motech tank bags that fit on a 'socket' that bolts to the filler cap surround? It looks like a really good solution to me and their small 'Trip' bag is very similar in size and shape to the magnetic Givi Voyager that I used on my GS and many other bikes.

My main concern is about the offset filler and whether having the bag offset causes any problem with clearance against right arm, right bar, etc?

Failing that, if anyone has a clever solution to give plastic magnetic properties I'd be happy to hear about it

I'm aware that there are no end of other possibilities including Baglux but (a) I don't want a vinyl tank cover and (b) I don't want a large, bulky tank bag, which most other alternatives are. I just want a day bag for toll money, wallet, camera, visor cleaner etc, and because of what I keep in it I want to be able to remove it quickly and easily from the bike.

This is the bag I have in mind:

and it attaches with one of these:

I'm tempted to just buy one and see how I get on with it.....

I've got the baglux and its excellent except it too suffers from the offset fuel filler - the bag 'tends' to fall to the right - it seems to always hit the inside of my right arm and be miles away from the left. I reckon that unless the bag has a moveable attachment then its guarenteed to sit on the right and look 'wank'

If you want to use a magnetic bag - just stick/glue some magnets/metal strips to the inside of the fairings - job done.

BMW 'peanut' bag would fit the bill. Without the extension bit it is perfect for the bits of junk you cart around but don't go in pockets, unclips in seconds and is reasonably well made. There is a zip fitting that screws to the fairing at the seat end and a metal and fabric clip thing at the headstock end.

I paid all of 40 quid for mine S/H with all the bits (extension, shoulder straps, waterproof cover, instructions even..). At that cost it has been superb.

Hmmm, still too big really. This is my Givi Voyager on the bike - not a very good angle to show it but you get the idea of how small it is!

That's all I want, really. Maybe I'll cobble something together myself to allow a central mounting for it on the S.

Hi Sproggy, I like the look of the SW Motech Trip tank bag, but according to this site http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/pr ... w/1859/16/

it's not possible to fit their gascap ring to an r1100s :(

looking at the Motech pics - the unextended BMW bag is not much bigger, there is a pic here http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/gb/en/index.html

and I believe there is one for sale on this forum.

(not that I'm trying to promote them or anything)

Ade.

Just looking at the picture again, it seems like alot of money and hassle for nothing much more than can be held in a few pockets...and not fly off, be left behind or otherwise lost, etc.

Assuming you're not in T-Shirt and swimming trunks that is...

Or unless you usually troll around with a European style "man bag"?????

You mean this bit?
If your bike has an off-center gascap, a gascap without screw holes in the rim, no gascap (electric bike?), or dual off-center gascaps, then this tankbag CANNOT be used with your bike.

The following bikes DO NOT have threaded gas-cap screws located in the top center of the gasoline tank and cannot use the SW-MOTECH Quick-Lock tankbag mount:

BMW
F650 ST / Funduro, -'99
K1100
K1200LT
R1100S
R1200C
R1200CL
R1200RT, '05-
R1200ST, '05-
Seems the only reason it's claimed not to be suitable is because of the offset filler. The 1100S filler cap is otherwise identical to others on R1100/1150 models. I'm sure they claim it's not compatible for liability reasons or in case someone buys it and then complains that "It doesn't fit properly".

Call me fussy, but I just don't like the BMW bag - specifically it's method of mounting to the bike. Same as I don't like the Baglux.
jltownshend wrote:it seems like alot of money and hassle for nothing much more than can be held in a few pockets
Carrying a camera, phone, wallet, passport, multitool, hotel reservations, toll money, visor cleaner, lip balm, GPS (when removed from bike) etc in pockets isn't something I'd like to try. Particularly on a long tour. I've just got used to having a small bag in front of me and don't want to change.
jltownshend wrote:Or unless you usually troll around with a European style "man bag"?????
Not generally, but when touring on the bike my Givi Voyager (alias "man bag") does tend to go everywhere with me. Everything of value in one convenient container that I can remove easily from the bike and take with me.

Neat, but suffers the same problem that anything mounted on the fuel filler of an 'S' will - being off-centre. Due to the nature of the fixings, though, it might be possible to move the bag-mounted bits sideways so that the bag still sits centrally - best solution I've seen so far. Incidentally, John, read the description of this item and it sums up why I like to use a bag of this type!

Sproggy I'd second Ade's suggestion of the BMW peanut/egg tank bag. The pictures you saw are extended, unextended it's small discreet and perfect as a day bag. I too bought mine second hand and it's ideal for what you want. Look again at Ade's pictures, specifically the one under the red track bike, now imagine it without the middle section that you can clearly see zips in and that's the small size.

I looked into those bags and you'll find that the base plate that fits the coupling on the tank is offset (if you get the R1100s one) so that the bag sits centrally.

I didn't buy one though, I bought the http://www.windingroads.co.uk/catalog/p ... ucts_id=60 one.

A nice small bag, that uses a base that is common for the rest of the range. I think you can even use the small bag, zipped to one of the larger bags?

Check out the site and give them a call if it looks like what you need.

(The base has the filler hole offset to suit the bike, of course)
