Hiya chaps. Wondered if I might take advantage of your wealth of knowledge on things flat twin?

My father-in-law has one of those 1200 Classic type cruisers and he is becoming a bit forgetful!

He recently went into the garage to fire the bike up, circulate the oil, etc and promptly returned to the house to take a phonecall, make a cup of tea or something equally dull.
Yep, you guessed it. He did'nt remember the bike was running for about a hour or so and on returning to the garage found the bike had stopped running

He now tells me that the bike will start but as soon as he applys any revs it just dies.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is it completey cattletrucked?

How hot will a flat twin get before it cries 'enough'?

Is a dealer the nly answer?

Any thought greatly appreciated.

I could be way off base here (in which case my guess will serve to shoot down an urban myth), but I'd say it was the cat. From what I've heard if they get too hot, often when the bike runs out of fuel, it screws (melts?) them and they choke the engine.

As I say, though, it's all hearsay on my part... but sounds convincing enough to make me believe it.

However, if I am right, whipping the cat off (why would you want one anyway? ) should fix it.

Did he have the fast idle lever on when he first started it?
What colour are the exhaust headers?
The bike may have stalled quite early on if he didnt use the fast idle.
If he did use the fast idle and the exhaust headers are blue then the engine may have been cooked.
If the bike starts and then wont rev,may be burnt valves.
In any case if the engines been cooked,its knackered!

Sorry for stating the obvious but this sounds like running out of petrol to me....... Is there any left in the tank?

He was lucky that it didn't catch fire & burn the house down. Do a search on the Pelican board for boxers catching fire when left to cook on idle.
US bikes have a safety sticker on them stating NEVER to let them idle (unattended).
