If anyone wants to dabble with GPS and fancies a bargain GPS Warehouse are knocking out refurbished SPIII's with mounts, power leads etc for £153 ish. These were £800 a few years back

Here: http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod3168.html

Only limited stock apparently but my mate ordered his Wednesday evening and received it this morning.

Under new EU directive rules M.A.P. and S.I.G.N. technology is being fazed out in favour of G.P.S.

Bob

They are effectively last years technology but, yes , they are very good. Rob B and Winger (Chris) both have them. I have a feeling Steve W has the later 2610.

They are quite large but with the right mount this shouldn't be a problem. You may just need to supplement the 128Mb data card with another if you want to load a lot of maps. Having said that the 128Mb will cover the whole of England and Wales.

If you're planning on making the trip I would ring to make sure they still have some left then pay for / reserve one.

Do they do chrome or polished alloy ones - don't want a dull grey box sullying the handsome good looks of the Streetrod ;)

And can you download POI (i.e. camera locations)?

you need the new generation of garmin gps to load POI, specifically speed camera locations and then the 800 quid device flashes a warning for you.
It would be cheaper to buy the spIII and a road angel, added bonus of lots of dangling wires for that Heath Robinson look!

I have been using Streetpilot 3 for a few years now. You cannot download speed cameras. Once you get used to GPS it is a great tool especially if you tour abroad or travel to new parts of the UK. Far easier then trying to follow a map on the tankbag or written direction notes.

For the price the GPS Warehouse are asking this is a bargain for Streetpilot 3; I have seen used ones sold for more on e-Bay.

One drawback with Streetpilot is that is now old technology. The newer 2610 and 2720 have better processros chips & are both faster to calculate the route or recalculate if you go off route. I have on occasion found the Streetpilot to freeze-up when trying to recalculate a particularly long and complex route. The newer models also have bigger memory capacity (2610 = 1Mb, I think). 2720 has all Euro maps preloaded in its memory.

The Streetpilot was originally sold with Euro V5 maps with a free upgrade to V6. From memory it is about £40 to get V7 maps off the Garmin web-site. Garmin are now at V8 in 2006 in the 2610/2720. Check which map version you are getting. There is so much more info in the latest versions that this affects the ability of Streetpilot to hold as many maps on its limited datacard.

A 128mb card in the Streetpilot will hold most, but not all UK maps. When touring I tend to have another two datacards - 128 & 256mb as well however even with 500mb will not hold all Euro maps.

Although my Streetpilot has been a faithful servant for 3 yrs I think I may change it next year for a 2720 especially as I see the GPS Warehouse has reduced the price of these now to £650.

Cannot recomend more highly. Very pleased with mine, the newer model will cost lots more. This is the top theft item from cares now, I was a victim and replace like with like.

You can download POI info i.e. speed cameras, I us the GS user forum to access data base lots of tech tips as well.

Boxertrix lots of postings on fitting, I use ram mount and touratech fittings so I can use in car, on BMW and Harley.

Very occasional frustration with re fresh time and this is when going off route and waiting to re calculate ( through using a short cut on the map, instead of planed route using main road) rather than on the move.

The biggest (?only) down side is size and weight, but it is robust and easy to see ( and hear with ear plug ).

You should be able to get V7 of mapsource with any new unit, upgrades are quite expensive.

you can download speed trap info, tech data and data base via GS user forum

At price offered this is a snip and I would go with it.

If considering other units I would caution:

1. Do not buy one with hard disc instead of memory stick as they are prone to crash and lose data.

2. Buy one with batteries in, otherwise every time you turn off ignition you will have to re start it which is a pain.

Had mine in Burton last year and will again this if intrested

I've got a Quest and a 2610,

The Quest has 143MB memory, so you have to choose the coverage carefully if you go to Europe.

The 2610 has 1GB which covers everywhere.

But, if you are new to GPS, and don't want to go out and buy a 2610/2720, then the Streetpilot 3 at the price you have - must be a good buy.

Sure, in a year you might want an upgrade, but I reckon you won't loose much (if anything) on selling the "3" then?

Just to add to what's already been said, I recently upgraded the maps on mine to v8.

Total cost for the upgrade (from v6 - I skipped v7) was £50 inc VAT.

Word of warning, though: unlike v6, the new v8 maps cover much larger sections of the country, so you can't fine-tune the areas quite so well as you could with v6. Couple that with more up-to-date information generally, and you can fit... well, England, on a 128MB card. That's all. 256MB cards for it, which aren't standard Compact Flash like the 2610 and above, cost at least £110... which is extortionate for the size, IMO, but the only way you'll be able to get the whole of the UK (or England and France in my case) on it.

As far as the unit itself goes, can't fault it (for the age). They even replaced the nadgered screen FOC on my father's SP3 when it got dropped; which can't be bad. They'll also fully refurbish an old unit for £100 (which seems a lot cheaper when you spent £700 on it originally than if you buy it for £150, I'll grant you :)).

Just to add to Chamelespoon's post, if you hold off registering the GPS unit until you want to upgrade your maps it can be done for free  (Always wait until January as that is generally when new maps are released).

Genuine Garmin data cards can be picked up off ebay for a lot less although I've never bought one myself.
