Bearings - DIY change. Any tips please...

Post by Harry »

Me and a mate are going to take on a replacement of the taper bearings over the weekend.
I'm sure this came up before but I couldn't find the thread. (Jason was it?)

Still, any tips please from the hardened techies would be appreciated.

Thanks Harry.

Tie the front wheel securely to the centre stand - you have been warned!

Just to stop the whole lot going forward off the stand with no back wheel on the bike when you're pushing the diff back on probably.

Did you find the thread Harry? It's a simple and straightforward job really - you'll need a bit of heat to release the big 32mm nut on the inside bearing adjuster, and remember to get all the oil out the diff before you lay it on it's side to drift the bearings out  You can easily get the lower UJ out the diff (to let you get easy access to the inside of the bearings) by getting a big screwdriver and levering it off the spline - don't be shy cos it's quite tight  Remember to give the UJ a good smack on the end when you reassemble to ensure the internal springclip engages back on the spline correctly. You should then be able to suspend the diff whilst holding the UJ.

Tips for re-alignment of the shaft.... I find it's 150th time lucky usually  but put a couple of the wheel nuts back in the diff so as you can minutely adjust the angle of the UJ each time you try. I also find a good load of lubrication on the shaft helps smooth the tight entry  and a screwdriver through the OS bearing hole to lift the shaft up a bit helps too. Don't forse it though. I also find it's easier to make sure the lower link is loose when checking for adjustment of the bearings (ie you can easier feel movement of the diff in your hands if the lower link is undone/loose)
