Clutch/Gear Box

Post by decisivedave »

As a relative newbie I'm still getting used to my S - When I'm in neutral, and at a stand still, and I need to get into first, sometimes I have to move the bike slightly forwards or backwards to get the gear in - (All other gear changing's fine) - Is this just a BMW thing or is my clutch not quite right? :?
Cheers, Dave

Its caused by a combination of having a dry clutch as oposed to a wet one. Also the gearbox arrangment doesnt help matters. It does get better the more miles you put on the gear box and what oil you use in it helps matters too.

Put fully syn in the gearbox,Mobil 1 is a good'un,mind you it ought to be at 13 quid a litre, but boy does it work, but any full syn gearbox oil wil do.

the S gear shift is (I understand) legendary for its agricultural character.

I've found that the box has loosened up considerably over the miles and can clutchless upchange beautifully with the merest tap of the lever...

until the thing pops into neutral from 5th or won't go in first time....

occassionally won't find neutral at lights without letting the clutch out to bite and then trying again.

found that the gear change improves considerably after a service (ie. they probably twiddle the gear selector and foot lever bit and change the oil).

havn't tried changing the oil in the box so I guess its just normal S behaviour.

The s uses seperate oil for engine and gearbox. No problem to put synth in gearbox now.

Decisive,

They (mostly) all do that, at first. No need to rock the bike. Just apply light pressure to the gear selector as you release the clutch and it will snick into 1st no problem.

Cheers,

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
