Shock Absorbers

Post by Boxerlass »

Hi All
In an effort to get my bike lowered a little I have bought Hagons for both front and rear (reduced by 30mm).

We were going to take them to the dealers to be fitted but my Husband is wandering if he could do the job himself. He is mechanically sound!!

Are there any particular problems? Would peeps consider it to be a reasonable job to tackle or is it best left to the experts?

Any advice welcomed please.

What about the torque arm? Do you need to get a longer one to compensate for the shorter shock?

Fitting the shocks is a doddle if you have the right tools (socket set, torque wrench and open ended spanners - 14, 15 and 17mm from memory).

Two tricky points to be aware of:

1. The bottom bolt on the rear shock is easily accessible with the CAT fitted but a Y piece may have to be loosened and moved / removed to get to it.

2. The top bolt on the front shock is tricky to torque up - you need to get a C spanner in to hold the top of the shock otherwise it just spins. Removing the side panels makes this a lot easier.

Download a copy of the pdf S manual and have a read.

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.

As Adam has said it's a doddle, the T/wrench is a little OTT,the only thing you really need one for is the rear wheel studs but useing one never did any harm.

With front, undo the top of the shock then put a car jack under the motor and raise the bike up the front wheel will stay on the floor and the top of the shock will drop out and clear the frame, when putting it back bolt the bottom of the shock in,have one of you line the shock up with the hole and the other lower the car jack, bum bum!!!!

Yep, easy peasey lemon squezzy, don't pay the dealer for this. Couple of spanners and it's 1 hours work. Even the front is not hard, TBH I found it less hassle than the rear.

Any probs just ask, there will be plenty of people to give advice, might even have photo documented it somewhere if they would help.

Like Adam says, the only potential problem is the bottom bolt on the rear shock. I have a Remus system and the bolt cannot be removed with the exhaust on, and removing or adjusting the exhaust can be a fraught (usually in the 'sheared bolt' category  ) experience. If you get this bolt out, the rest is easy peasy

A BIG thank you to all you guys who have replied! :love1: You have probably saved the Young household a few quid! I have downloaded the relevant part from our S PDF manual, Adam (although it is far from detailed), but all of your comments are so helpful. We have all of the tools and the car jack mentioned so no problems there. And it is good to know that you guys are around to help if we come unstuck with anything.

BMWWonder - Hagon's shocks are designed to fit the S and they would have told us, I'm sure, if we had needed to change the torque arm. There have been quite a few emails passed between us before we committed - they are a very helpful lot.

Well, it sounds like the sort of job that will get us out from under the telly during the Christmas holidays - just have to pick a reasonably sober moment now!

Have a good Christmas everone! :santa:

Success!! 8)
Tony replaced the shocks today with some lowered Hagon shocks. Job was easy thanks to all the advice from you guys. I can now get my feet on the floor - yipeee!!! :wav:

Haven't had chance to ride it yet, due to inclement weather, but the bike actually looks very good - sort of meaty, low and mean! I have only lowered it 30mm so the side stand is still ok, just leans at a slight less angle but is still stable.

Anyway, thanks once more to those who took the time.
