Just seen the very sad news that William Dunlop has been killed at the Skerries 100. Headline is "motorcycle racer Dunlop killed", and I immediately assumed Michael, since he always look on the very limit.

Very sad news. My thoughts are with the family. He was an incredibly nice young man. Liam Beckett (a long time family friend) has posted a lovely tribute to him on BBC NI.

I heard today that the cause of the accident was the bike bottomed out and the sump plug got ripped out causing oil over the back wheel

Wow !!!
Must have been a hell of a bang !!!!
Poor man !!!
In my racing days , the crashes that gave the worst injuries were generally when some thing unforeseen happened .
Where ever you were sort of in control , yes you crashed and often got hurt , but the severest injuries , like when my fork leg broke at about 80 mph , and the wheel turned 90 degrees , spat me straight off .......
Broken colar bones , both, broken shoulder blade, broken jaw, 10 broken ribs, punctured lung, broken wrist , broken arm , abrasions through the leathers ..... Yep totally unforeseen .
11 days intensive care, 17 days general ward before going home . Racing again within 3 months ...
