Are my front discs warped or is it summat simple like pads?

Symptoms are a kind of "pulse" through the lever when braking gently, through to a full-on, eyeball rattling judder under hard braking. Can't find anything loose, pads are original and have plenty material left so I'm thinking the disc/discs are warped.

Any way to check without dismantling?

Does sound to me like warped discs.
Get the front wheel off the ground.Tape or hold a straight edge from the fork leg to the face of the disc.Spin the wheel,any noticable out of true should show up.Check the front wheel aswell.As they are soft and a inpact can soon have them buckled,which could affect the brake rotors.

Check the wavy washers under the disc mounting bolts I had 4 out of 5 broken or missing.

Also check the pads, EBC can wear at the post hole and the hooked bits to hold onto the caliper. The whole braking area vibes like hell when the pads are moving.

Thanks for replies, at least I've a few things to check now, although I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the discs.

I had both my front discs replaced recently (thankfully bike was still under warranty!) after exhibiting precisely the same symptoms you just described; braking is now smooth as silk.

it's from the USA, but that doesn't mean it's all b*llocks

I had terrible but intermittent judder a couple of years back...

I initially thought it was to do with heat, as it was intermittent, but no, warm or hot, slow or fast , there it was...

Even through a BMW service...still there.

Until I had the pads changed at FWR. All gone.

So I'd suggest reading the article in the previous post...very interesting!
