boing

Post by GRAgusta »

It is dry as a crisp in the hills in Perthshire.

Out and about on the bike today I saw in separate locations two roe deer jump across the road in front of me. Never so close as to be a danger to me but I have never seen that before from my bike... so the dry weather must be having an effect. Watch Out.

I got knocked off by a deer couple of years ago.
I was only doing about 5mph slowing down for a red light and the bloody thing ran out of the Ibis hotel car park to my left and literally head butted me off.
Shook me up quite a bit.

Happened to me two weeks ago - One crossed right in front of me and then 5 more crossed in front of the rider behind. I have found in the past that where there is one there will always be at least one more. So as Shaw Taylor used to say "Keep 'em peeled"

Funny you mention that .

On saturday evening I was on my way to my g/f and a deer ran across the road in front of me

I was on the BMW , it was about 15 yards in front of me and I was doing about ... er 60 !!

I hit one a few years ago in my car, I know the damage the bastards do to a car.

As to OP says , be aware .... :?

Yep, good advise, always expect at least one more to come from the same direction, even if you can't see them, they can leap and jump for 'England'

Loads of Muntjac around where I live. Never encountered one on the bike, but had a few close calls in the car, typically in the early evening. They might be small, but they can jump bloody high when they need to!

Had a herd of deer run out across the path of my car in Essex a few years back, that would have made a mess had I been moving a bit quicker.

O think badgers are worse.
The run out from under hedges.
Went over one in my car once and it was like hitting a big rock.

I can testify to that hit one with my front wheel (car) at about 60 its head exploded and left gook all down the side of the ca -r hell of bang when it hit. Many years later two ran out in front of me first one made it across the road second one went under the car as I was braking - as the car came to a halt the Badger rolled out in a cloud of dust shook itself and wandered off.

Pigs, Kangaroos, Wallabys are most likly to run out in front of vehicles at any time of day where I am.

Emus have taken a few out I have heard. They are quite happy on the side that they are on, and then for some unknown reason, they want to be on the other side of the road as one approaches.

Wedgetail eagles and other birds eating road kill are pretty bad. The wedgetails are so big (because of abundant roadkill) that they take for ever to take off...... need to be really carefull because they are BIG.
did have a wonderful experience once going across the Barkely Downs in the Northern Territory, a wedgetail took off and flew along side just above helmet hight for about 20 meters, so close - amazing.

Cows are just stupid, some are road sense to cars / trucks, bit wary of motorbikes and never seen a bicycle before.

Pretty much its dont ride outside the urban areas between dusk and dawn. Have done it, but speed needs to come right down.....
its the one you dont see that will get you!

Really enjoying a lovely ride home from work this morning - everything just felt good despite the earlier rain. About 2 miles from home just managed to duck and miss a pheasant taking off - new underpants please
