Price of painting?

Post by RSBowling »

Hi,
I have no experience in getting parts painted by a professional, plenty powder coat but never painted.
Was wondering what I should expect to pay. I'm in the process of buying a belly pan (eBay) and potentially a headlight surround fairing (forum members)
Both to be painted gloss black, as I have a mandarin 11s, and I think the black contrast would look smart.
Maybe fork lowers too? Got Hammerite at the ready, but maybe tempted to let the pros do it.
Any help would be great, and if anyone lives local to me (Durham) is there a good place to go?
Cheers,
Rich

Just my opinion and not meant to be negative but I think a large area like the belly pan would be too heavy in gloss black against the mandarin. Perhaps a gunmetal or dark silver for both areas. There's the 'yellow/grey' boxer cup style paint to get a reference from.

All subjective and personal choice of course. It's yours; If you're happy then what anyone else thinks really doesn't matter. Photos are essential when it's done.

Enjoy whatever you do. Nice winter project.

Been through all of this over past few months....

I opted to hammerite my forks, was happy with results (note used a etch primer as well).

Failed miserably on parts like centre stand, rear sub-frame - i think its the tubular nature i kept getting runs.. Sent it to
http://tpcs-magnesium-refurbs.co.uk/ who did first class job & i would argue are a good price; this guy is an old forum member, r11s owner & expert at powder coating. I had front yoke done (probably have done it in hammerite in hindsight to match with lower forks (hammerite), but if you are going black, i woudl opt to powdercoat yoke perhpaps satin finish); NOTE unless your prepared to fully strip the forkes including the inner plastic tube then you'll need to paint. Other parts i powdercoated were battery tray, barends (satin black), pannier rails, other odds that were needing a tidy up...

Body work i think is again another area which i think might be easier (flat surface) but you are going to have to practice if you want perfect result & pressumbly finish with a clear gloss.

Have fun..

Cheers Brad,
Pleased you mentioned etch primer, was wondering if I needed too as I'd be using 'ammerite

The forks and front of engine will be done by me (poor bike!) I contemplated doing these areas in black, but I think I will stay original silver, and I have not seen a picture of someone done in black.
Now I've had a thought regarding the fairing paint. A great suggestion was to paint the belly pan and headlight fairing in the grey which comes with the mandarin and grey pattern. I'm thinking of adding the indicator pods to this, as I think the Matt black next to would look daft. Don't want too many colours on the bike. Any opinions on this?
Have just ordered a belly pan, off ricambi Weiss. Don't know how long that will take. Once that's here I'm going to take parts to various paint shops and see what the price will be, Dave the German sent me some contacts which I'm going to try, cheers mate.
Im trying to achieve a subtle change, using paint colour from the BMW range. But try give the bike a younger look.
Be my winter project, can't wait too get parts together and crack on/up!

The swingarm and bevel box on my K1100RS had been hand painted.
I decided to repaint in situ
I stripped away a lot of the back end to gain access.
I sanded the whole thing back to bare metal, and without primer, sprayed it all with Hammerite satin black
The result was a near factory finish.
The secret is to use a hair dryer on full heat as you spray with the help of a friend
This prevents drip.
I got a near factory finish that was durable and showed no signs of fade or damage over several thousand miles and loads of washes.
Remarkable considering where it was,
Hammerite is brilliant stuff

Cheers Fontana,
Good tip with the hairdryer, didn't cross my mind to use it whilst spraying. How many coats did it take? And how soon could you get another coat ?
