Quicker Throttle response?

Post by BigRob »

I am the proud new owner of a R1200S (2006) i love it however am finding that to get to Wide open throttle requires a lot of twisting. I would love to reduce the twist needed and maybe even a faster response. Does anyone have a fix for this quick action or some other magic mod?

There were a lot of posts on this. There is a pulley thing involved which is elliptical, and thats where my technical knowledge ends.
But i do know some people removed/altered/replaced said things to obtain a smoother and quicker throttle response throughout the rev range.

As Andy says, this has been looked at before, so search through old posts on here and Pelican.

One of the methods was to remove the roller that bears on the cam which allowed the cam to rotate further round and work through the more linear part of the cam travel. (it makes sense in my head!)

Personally, I have never seen anything that looks properly functional, or doesn't introduce other compromises. I don't even think about it now, you adapt very quickly.

Yes, although its all been tried, no easy fix. I just live with it as a part of the bike, you get used to it, think of it as eccentric character

I never got use to it and it's the thing that made me want to sell the bike.
I have 'mostly' eradicated it with a 'compensator' that is produced and sold in Germany. I got mine off eBay (I'll have to look into it to find what it is called) and a pair of 'grip puppies' as the bigger grips mean less turn for the same amount of relative throttle action. It's not as I'd like but has made it made it acceptable.

The 'compensator' sits under the throttle cable in the twist grip mech and takes back some of the pull that is lost in the essentric throttle pulley at the injectors end.

BigRob, i have one of the throttle gizmos. Bought it from Gus.
It does make a difference for sure. A lot of torque with the smallest of movements. Too much in wet conditions Imo, but great for the traffic light racing starts in the dry haha.
I think it would be what you need.
Someone was looking at modified cams on the throttle bodies but that was for racing. Its gone quiet though on that. Probably too much on the road?

Big Rob

Big thread on it here. Judging by your current bikes the mod isn't going to give you any problems in the dry 'or' the wet. Personally I find it a little better with the throttle cam and better still with the grip puppies. My (now sold) Harley XR1200 had gobs more early access to the torque as does the Thruxton R that I took for a test ride the other week.

I'm perfectly happy with the BMW set up. I've had the back end slide off when accelerating hard ish on less than ideal surfaces. Without traction control too much torque low down can get you in trouble.

I never even noticed it as a problem but my R12S had the grip pups fitted when I bought it.
Yes it was a different feel to the R11S, but just re-calibrated the brain to throttle connection when I got on the bike and all was fine.
