ABBA Stand

Post by bikerboy »

Bike collapsed off the abba stand while replacing the diff,
Stripped the roller bearings in the diff when the bike hit the ground ripped seat cover, fairing bent, maybe the belly pan (bike still on its L/H side)
Abba offering new fitting kit as I sent them pics of the 2 cracks + out of round! + £75.00 to spend in there shop! About £300.00 Damage to bike, will not offer me more. Saying there not @ fault of stand!!? + what would I want from there shop except the fittings for the stand! Still ongoing

They're talking bollocks, if the equipment failed and caused additional damage it can be claimed as compensatory damages, the damage is a direct result of causation and is expressly covered in English Tort law.

Technical talk Steve ?

Seriously, that's bad news. Really sorry for you.
Being objective I s'pose the age of the stand and conditions of use are relevant. Level ground, correct applicators etc. Have you got a receipt, photographs or witnesses? A bit more left field - legal expenses insurance under your household policy ? ( don't ask me how I know but it can be very useful :(

I think the £300 credit is a bit of a clue that they are a little bit uneasy already.

Polite negotiation to start, you can always ramp it up, but its hard to come down of you start off all shouty.

I might suggest that I am going to write to that nice lawyer in Motor Cycle News and see what he says. It makes a change from ' a deer ran out in front of my bike, can I sue the Queen?' type of letter that MCN usually publish.

Good luck with it.

.
I read that they offered £75. They will use "did you not inspect the equipment prior to use?" and also cite possible mis-use (overtightening etc).

How many times have you used that stand?

Ok - The stand is 2.5yrs old, used it maybe 10 times since new always
rechecked it was secure/tightened correctly never sat on bike while on stand ever!

Ditch the Abba Stand. I have been using this.

http://wunderlich.sportouring.net/BMW-R ... 1100s-1730

Much better, easier to mount, easier to lift, easier to remove and can even move the bike around with it fitted.

I have a spare Abba Stand if interested.
'Let me check my concernometer.'
