Seriously hoping to change from the R1200GS Adv(s) I have ridden for the last 9 years - to something a bit more nimble, but still with good load-carrying and mileage-eating capabilities............

Blown hot and cold over all of the following:
BMW R1200GS LC
Multistrada
BMW R
S1000XR
KTM 990 SMT

But Look what's being released for next year!

Just got myself a current 1290 SD and it is mental. I figure the GT will be a great tourer with the better wind protection and luggage. Though at a cost....

I am an admirer of the KTM brand. I liked the idea behind the SMT 990.

Not exactly inexpensive but hopefully lower costs in use than the modern BMW`s?

I have a 990SMT and love it. But trust me, its not a mile muncher....

No - I realise that, but for a holiday - with panniers fitted for the run there, and fun with the panniers off - it is a tempting option.

Fit a rack for 31 ltr panniers, a square top-box and maybe a 5ltr fuel pack?

Pack a bit lighter than I usually do with the GSA......... it is a bike which still has compromises in getting there - but would pay back in spades in the Provence Alps (for example).

I saw this and fell in love instantly. would replace both the r1100s and speed triple. BUt 2 issues, first is the cost will be up there with a multistrada ( another bike that's on the wish list)
and secondly (and most importantly) those panniers will be about as much use as the ones on my K1200r. ie a pair of socks and a toothbrush

It's gotta be better reliability than the 'Strada?

Also - I'm quite happy hanging a pair of medium Metalmule boxes on it for the route down and route back. (great for supermarket beer-runs too.)

The SMT had tiny cases, but plenty of aftermarket panniers (Trax etc) sit well on that bike.

With "every conceivable electronic rider aid we could muster" Aye, that would be to restrict/tame/neutralise the 173 bhp on tap.

Would be interested to read the shoot out reviews with the other adventure/sport bikes. Not exactly a skinny malinky at 223kg. Obscene unusable power.

Peak power requires peak load - only deliverable at top speed, with full air drag.

I think the quoted weight is for "fully-fuelled" - so is perhaps lighter than the competition?

How did you reconcile all these 'anomalies' on the Multistrada?
